Scripture: Mt 6:10

Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.---Mt 6:10

---

I. Your Kingdom Come

A. Future Fulfillment

  • Satan is the current ruler of this world.

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God. ---2 Cor 4:4, NLT

6 … I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.---Lk 4:6-7

  • But, we know what will take place at the end.

In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.---Dan 2:44

The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.”---Rev 11:15

  • In praying for His Kingdom to come, we pray for the day when:
    • The devil and his minions would be defeated
    • Evil would no longer reign
    • God's reign is established
    • All the kingdoms of the world would recognize and submit to God’s authority.

B. Present Reality

  • The Kingdom of God is with us in the present because Jesus is with us.

20 … The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.---Lk 17:20-21

  • The kingdom of God as a present reality is a hidden presence now that will only be fully revealed in the future.

The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed ... like yeast ... Mt 13:31-33

  • We must choose to make Jesus the King of our lives and put Him first.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.---Mt 6:33

---

II. Your Will Be Done

A. God's Sovereign Plan

  • God’s Sovereign Plan is enduring and will never fail.

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.---Gen 50:20

B. Our Active Choice

  • God created humanity with free will
  • Praying “let your will be done” means that we lay aside our own personal will, our personal desires, and we place God’s will above our own.

Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.---Lk 22:42

  • Peter and John recognized the God’s reign over all things, including Jesus’ death on the cross.
  • They prayed for God to steel them and empower them to do the will of God.

24 … “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them … 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.---Acts 4:24-29

  • Make a personal act of commitment to surrender our choices, preferences, and surrender even our understanding to the will of our Father in heaven.

III. On Earth As It Is In Heaven

  • For Matthew, the end goal of God’s redemptive plan is not the destruction or replacement of earth. It is the reuniting of the heavenly and earthly realms.
  • To pray "on earth as it is in heaven” is to pray for:
    • God’s Kingdom to be manifest NOW on earth as it is currently established in the heavenly realm.
    • God’s will to be done NOW on earth, as it is currently being done and accomplished in heaven.

Two Challenges for Us

1. Obey God Completely

    • Our primary concern should not our name, not our kingdom, not our will, but God’s name, God’s kingdom, God’s will.
    • Are we obeying God’s command and executing His will by loving God and others wholeheartedly?
    • People around us should be able to look at how the people of God love one another and love others and be able to see what the kingdom of heaven is like - so much so that they want to have a share in the future kingdom to come.

2. Live Out Our Faith Consistently

  • We are facing incredible pressure to compromise on our beliefs.
  • We know that we will face persecution and hardships and suffering because of our faith
  • Are we living out our faith consistently in a world that pressures us to compromise and to waver?
  • We will TRIUMPH over the enemy as long as we persevere and endure to the end, no matter what we may face, no matter what troubles may come.

19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.”---Ps 103:19-20

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. ---Jn 16:33

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.---Rev 12:10-11

"These first three petitions, though they focus on God’s name, God’s kingdom, and God’s will, are nevertheless prayers that He may act in such a way that His people will hallow His name, submit to His reign, and do His will. It is therefore impossible to pray this prayer in sincerity without humbly committing oneself to such a course."---D. A. Carson, The Expositor’s Bible Commentary

---

At the end, everything will be set right. No more crime, no more discrimination, no more hatred, no more sickness, no more grief. But until then, we who long for God’s kingdom and will on earth must obey God completely and live out our faith consistently here and now, exhibiting the righteousness of God and seeking His will to be done in our lives.
