John 14:15–31 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

God Abides with us

John 14:16–18 ESV
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
God the Holy Spirit is with you forever.
Old testament Spirit came upon and departed
New Testament Spirit dwells within
The Spirit of Truth
His revelation of Jesus and the Father is that of the truth for He Himself is truth
The world cannot recieve Him because it knows Him not. Why cannot people not see the truth of the Bible, because they reject the Holy Spirit.
Not orphans I will come to you - Jesus himself is with us
Being the Triune God Jesus can say that in sending the Spirit he also sends himself. The full Presence of God is present in you. Not a piece or a part but all the glory and power of God indwells you as a believer.
John 14:21 ESV
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
God will make himself known to you. As a believer you may or may not ever see Him but you will feel his presence in your life you will hear him speak to you in your soul. God will reveal himself to you.
John 14:23 ESV
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
He will make his home with you. God will dwell no more in tents or temples. You realize that we often call this building God’s house but it is more accurate to say that we are God’s house. We the Christians are the house of God. This is simply a building we gather in. We meet here in this building but it is us who are the house of God.
The question then comes if we treat this building with respect and honor because of its dedication as a place of worship, how much greater should we treat our bodies as the true temples of God. It puts a whole new meaning on Paul’s writings on the subject.
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 ESV
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
How are we caring for God’s Temple? Suddenly everything I do to my body my treatment of it changes for it is God’s house.

Obedience is the demonstration of our love

John 14:15 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
John 14:21 ESV
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
John 14:23 ESV
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
John 14:24 ESV
Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
Four times God ties our obedience to his commands and teachings to our love for him. He is saying it is not enough to say you love me prove it by your obedience.
There are those who claim that obedience is not necessary for the christian due to the forgiveness of God. We need not be concerned for God will forgive us if we but ask. Yet Jesus says here if you love me keep my commandments
The repetition shows its importance He wanted us to hear him If you love me keep my commandments, He who has and keeps my commandments is he who loves me, If you love me keep my word, he who does not love me does not keep my words. Clearly Jesus thought we should obey his word that obedience was necessary for the Christian.
Yet notice this is not obedience to gain salvation as many thought in the old testament rather this is obedience produced by our love for him.
As we begin to love God we begin to obey him as we grow in love we grow in obedience. If love for one another is the litmus test of the disciple then obedience is the litmus test for our love for God.
Yet how can we overcome our sinful flesh and be obedient.

The Spirit of truth teaches us obedience

John 14:25–26 ESV
“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is that of a teacher.
He teaches us the meaning of Scripture and what Jesus Taught.
This allows us to know the expectations and desire of our Lord
Yet he is not just a rule giver he is a heart changer the Holy Spirit actually transforms our hearts to desire obedience to want to do what is right.
Anyone who has been a christian long knows this we no longer enjoy hanging out with the same people we don’t want to the things we used to we would rather be at church worshipping God.
Finally he enables us to do what is right by molding us into the image of God.
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Peace the reward

John 14:27–31 ESV
Jesus ends by saying i give you peace All this talk of leaving, Judas Betrayal, and Peter’s denial, and Jesus says I give you peace. Seems like a lot of fear to me.
So how then does Jesus give peace. I believe the answer is in the Holy Spirit. Jesus has brought peace between God and man and God is now dwelling inside man. As we come to love God more and more and in so doing are more and more obedient to him I believe we also come to a greater understanding of the greatness of the statement in Romans 8:31
Romans 8:35–39 ESV
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You see all else may go wrong, everything may be against us, we may lose all we have and all of our loved ones but no one and nothing can take us away from God. He is with us always and forevermore His love for us is eternal and for this reason we can have peace. Because God loves me and has chosen to live in me.

Invitation

Yet maybe you do not have the presence of God in your life. I ask you this simple question do you want him all you have to do is invite him in and allow him to be Lord of your life. You too can have peace will you open the door to your heart to him today. Many of you have already accepted Christ as your Lord and he is an old friend Yet to you I challenge you are you still growing in your love and obedience to him, or have you become stagnant and need to be cleansed again. Do you need to repent and ask him to draw you closer to him. Will you decide today to demonstrate your love for him through your obedience to his word?
