That You May Know: An Assurance That Breeds Confidence Part II: (1 John 5:13-21)
Hindsight: “Understanding of a situation or event only after it has happened or
developed.”
Author David Zindell on the Reality of Hindsight: “Before, you are wise; after you are
wise.
In between you are otherwise.”
Melodic Line: “These things we write so that your joy may be made complete, so that
you may not sin, and so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
(It was all the way
back on May 8th that I gave to us our original Melodic Line.
After about three months,
and the benefit of hindsight, is there anything that we would change?)
Revised Melodic Line: In order to restore their joy, John employs three tests which are
applied so that the true Christian is assured that what they profess is absolutely what
they possess.
Which ultimately produces confidence before God because the true
Christian knows that they possess the eternal life.
Sermon Idea: Here, in vs. 18-21 John outlines the Christian’s final three confidences
based upon our assurance and then adds a concluding exhortation.
Fallen Condition Focus: In this world of sin where Satan dominates, the Christian can
be assured that they in fact do belong to God, through the keeping power of Christ.
