Matthew 9:9-13
Story of Meeting Darren, climbing on this barn, jumping into my care while i’m driving, jumping into my car while i’m driving.
Darren loved being around me, he loved to follow me, I loved leading him. At YL camp we went out to a dock at Saranac Lake at night to have a 1 on 1 after cabin time. He finally realized he had a purpose beyond his family and failure. He told me that. He said that he experienced Jesus in a whole new way and it was a game changer. A life changer for him.
I want to invite us into a story about another guy who had a similar experience in Mark 9.
Mark 9.
9:9-13
vs 9
Matthew puts this so point blank.
vs 10
Jesus has dinner at Matthews house
This is a natural meal. Matthew doesn’t put a new box around his head about who can come to Jesus and how to do it. He does it the way he always does.
vs 11
Can you imagine Jesus inviting the Pharisees? “Hey you all want to come over to my new disciples house?” Well who is it Jesus?!?....”Oh the Tax Collector Matthew”
This leads to one of the most profound questions in the Gospel of Matthew.
Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?
Question to ask, "why does Jesus eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
vs 12
Look at Jesus’s response.
Not the healthy but the sick.
Go and learn
Matthew Quotes from Hosea 6:6
Go and learn, I want you to read Hosea 6 with a few people next to you.
Question: What does Jesus want you to learn?
Hesed
loyal love
A love that is both feeling and action, a love that is slow to anger,
Israel says they will repent, God stops them mid speech. He says vs 6, acknowledge God over everything stop the worthless burnt offerings.
Hosea 6 NIV
“Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” “What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears. Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets, I killed you with the words of my mouth— then my judgments go forth like the sun. For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. As at Adam, they have broken the covenant; they were unfaithful to me there. Gilead is a city of evildoers, stained with footprints of blood. As marauders lie in ambush for a victim, so do bands of priests; they murder on the road to Shechem, carrying out their wicked schemes. I have seen a horrible thing in Israel: There Ephraim is given to prostitution, Israel is defiled. “Also for you, Judah, a harvest is appointed. “Whenever I would restore the fortunes of my people,
Questions to leave with?
Do you think Jesus would walk past you in your mess or would he call your name?
Question to ask, "who do you eat with?"
Question to ask Go and learn, God sys I desire mercy not sacrifice. What does that mean in your life? What do you need to do with that, because you need to do something.
