I. The Profit of Scripture (16b).
I. The Profit of Scripture (16b).
Teaching- the act of teaching, teaching, instruction (BAGD).
Reproof- expression of strong disapproval, reproach, rebuke, reproof (BAGD).
Correction- correcting, restoration (BAGD).
Training in Righteousness- the act of providing guidance for responsible living, upbringing, training, instruction (BAGD).
There is some overlap between the meaning and semantics of the terms being used. But the emphasis is dealing with instruction from God for the purpose of transformation.
God is the authority behind the Scriptures so it is binding on all of His creation but specifically critical for discipleship.
Could you imagine being a disciple of Jesus Christ without the Scriptures speaking to your life?
II. The Practicality of Scripture (17).
II. The Practicality of Scripture (17).
Scripture doesn’t only disciple the believer in righteousness, it also equips the believer for the function of ministry.
Scripture offers guidance but it also is the truth that the Holy Spirit uses to sanctify us in preparation for the ministerial purpose of our redemption.
Some argue that this ministerial preparation here is only for Elders, like Timothy. But we learn from Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Therefore we can see that that ministry is not optional for the believing Christian. All of us have ministry as a part of our redemptive purpose.
How would the neglect of Scripture undermine believers in living out their redemptive purpose?
How critical is it for Scripture to have an active priority over our lives in worship and ministry?
