OTHNIEL THE JUDGE (עָתְנִיאֵל, othni'el). An Israelite warrior, the first judge of Israel, and a relative of Caleb.
The name “Othniel” means “God is my protection.” Textual traditions vary on the relationship between Othniel and Caleb, making the two either brothers or uncle and nephew (Niditch, Judges, 33).

Achsah (ak’-sah) = Same as Achsa = Adorned; anklet; an ornament for the feet. Bursting the veil.

The Canaanite name was Kirjath-sepher, which means “city of books.” In ch. 15:49 it is called Kirjath-sannah, city of palm trees. It was in the highlands of Judah about 12 mi. (19 km.) southwest of Hebron and about 8 mi. (13 km.) southeast of Lachish. It has been identified with Tell Beit Mirsim. The Canaanites subsequently retook the city, but Othniel, the brother of Caleb, later recaptured it for Israel. For his bravery he received Achsah, the daughter of Caleb, in marriage (ch. 15:17). The city was given to the priests (ch. 21:15).
