I want to open up this sermon by dealing with a few basic principles
Colossians 1:15–17 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
last week we dealt with the wilderness as a place where God speaks to us one on one!
“Spirit Christology”
which is simply a term for recognizing the critical part played by the work of the Spirit through the earthly work of Christ.
Jesus was dependent upon the Spirit for the successful completion of the work God had given him to do in this world.
We see the work of the Spirit throughout the earthly life of Christ
1) From birth
Luke 1:35 ESV
And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.
2) In Childhood
Isaiah 11:2 ESV
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
Luke 2:47 ESV
And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
Luke 2:52 ESV
And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.
3) At Baptism
Luke 3:21–22 ESV
Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Not to be to deep…
Jesus relied on the Spirit because He is more than our sacrifice but also our example!
1 Peter 2:21–24 ESV
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Let’s go deeper!
Jesus is our example /
Philippians 2:4–5 ESV
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

In other words Christ did not hesitate to set aside His self-willed use of deity when He became a man. As God He had all the rights of deity, and yet during His incarnate state He surrendered His right to manifest Himself visibly as the God of all splendor and glory.

Christ’s humiliation included His making Himself nothing, taking the very nature (morphē) of a servant, and being made in human likeness (v. 7). These statements indicate that Christ became a man, a true human being. The words “made Himself nothing” are, literally, “He emptied Himself.” “Emptied,” from the Greek kenoō, points to the divesting of His self-interests, but not of His deity. “The very nature of a servant” certainly points to His lowly and humble position, His willingness to obey the Father, and serve others. He became a man, a true human being. “Likeness” suggests similarity but difference. Though His humanity was genuine, He was different from all other humans in that He was sinless (Heb. 4:15).

Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
2 Questions people may ask…
Was Jesus tempted like me? Yes
Could Jesus have sinned? No
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The Wilderness has a purpose....
Matthew 4:1 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Luke 4:1 ESV
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
Jesus was led by the Spirit
#1 He was led…
Jesus teach us that we must follow the leading of the Spirit in our Life!
His will had to line up with the will of the Father!
Luke said he was full of the Holy Spirit
John 3:34 ESV
For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
Acts 10:38 ESV
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
“To be tempted by the devil”
Tempted: to be tested v. — to be put to the test in order to ascertain the nature of someone, including imperfections, faults, or other qualities.
Jesus was tempted to see if He was fake or real!
He wilderness experience gives me my purpose!
The devil is just an instrument used by God to prove to me who Jesus really is!
