18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Jesus didn’t tell us to make good programs, great social services, or even excellent church services that hit all the right notes - of length, intensity, depth, temperature, and political correctness so that everyone is comfortable.
Jesus didn’t even command pastors to be great communicators, counselors, business leaders, equally empathetic and yet unyieldingly strong & bold while wearing the right shoes and using the most relevant language.
Jesus told us to make disciples that would follow Jesus’ commands.
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone is desiring to come after me, let him forget self and lose sight of his own interests, and let him pick up his cross and carry it, and let him be taking the same road with me that I travel, for whoever is desiring to save his soul-life shall ruin it, but whoever will pass a sentence of death upon his soul-life for my sake, shall find it. For what will a man be profited if he gain the whole world but forfeit his soul-life. Or, what shall a man give as an exchange for his soul-life? For the Son of Man is about to be coming in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He shall recompense to each one according to his manner of acting.
Jesus commands us to deny ourself take up our cross and follow Him.
This is a command for EVERY person, not just for clergy.
It is likely that Jesus only carried the patibulum (the cross bar of the cross) but it was estimated to be 75-125 pounds
How heavy was the weight of sin that Jesus carried?
If we don’t take our sins to the place that Jesus is goin, we get to carry the weight of those sins ourself - it is our choice.
16 “Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin.
24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
