Good morning and welcome to Ebenezer Baptist Church. Thank you for allowing me this opportunity. This Church means so much to myself and my family. My wife and I received our salvation here (myself July 21, 2019 and Natalie August 4, 2019), we were baptized here on August 18, 2019, and we were married here on August 24, 2019. Ebenezer is our home! Natalie and I will be renewing our vows this Wednesday right here at the end of the Wednesday night service. We would love for each of you to be here to celebrate this special occasion with us.
Today we be in Matthew chapter 28 verses 16-20 discussing The Great Commission and what that looks like.
If you are a follower of Jesus Christ this commission applies to you. If you are not a follower of Jesus Christ or if you are uncertain, please do not leave here today without the certainty of your salvation intact. Pastor Mark, pastor Gary, or myself would love nothing more than to share with you the gift of eternal life through our King, Jesus Christ.
If you are able would you please stand with me for the reading of God’s holy Word.
Matthew 28:16–20 NKJV
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Prayer
Thank you. You may be seated.
There is so much meat to unpack in these 4 verses.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James went to see the tomb.
There was an earthquake.
An angel of the Lord came down from heaven and rolled away the stone from Jesus’ grave and sits waiting.
He tells the women that Jesus has risen and instructs them to see for themselves.
On their way to tell the disciples what they have witnessed, they meet Jesus.
Jesus instructs them to go tell the disciples to meet Him in Galilee.
It is important to note that this commission was given in Galilee and the commission in Acts took place in Jerusalem.
Matthew 28:16 NKJV
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.
This is one of many mountain top moments that Matthew mentions in his gospel.
Growth comes when we’re lost in the valleys, but we must always remember our Ebenezer stones from our mountain top experiences.
January 5th 2021 I fasted for the first time for cr
quiet time in my truck
asked Jesus to come in the truck
He did
Matthew 28:17 NKJV
When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
Stuart Weber writes:
But some doubted (the word doubt means “to duplicate,” “to be of two minds,” or “to waver, hesitate”). All wanted to believe, but their faith was weak. Some experienced the internal tug-of-war between “two minds”—the one wanting to follow their fledgling faith and the other wanting to follow “reason.” Even those presented with clear evidence for the truth can still have doubts. But the word some implied there were others who believed everything they saw. These were the followers of the Messiah-King who would continue on into Acts, willing to take any risk in obedience to their master. This was true faith in action, living on the edge of “risky” obedience.
There is reference that there is more than just the eleven at this meeting on the mountain. Some say there were 500 as Paul mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:6.
1 Corinthians 15:6 NKJV
After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep.
Regardless there were those who saw first hand the risen King and still struggled with disbelief.
Paul writes to the Church in Rome:
Romans 10:9–10 NKJV
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
In the next three verses there are 3 very important All’s.

All authority.

Matthew 28:18 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Warren Wiersbe writes:
An authority (v. 18). In this verse, the word power means “authority,” the right to use power. The entire Gospel of Matthew stresses the authority of Jesus Christ. There was authority to His teaching (Matt. 7:29). He exercised authority in healing (Matt. 8:1–13), and even in forgiving sins (Matt. 9:6). He had authority over Satan, and He delegated that authority to His Apostles (Matt. 10:1). At the close of his Gospel, Matthew made it clear that Jesus has ALL authority.Since Jesus Christ today has all authority, we may obey Him without fear. No matter where He leads us, no matter what circumstances we face, He is in control. By His death and resurrection, Jesus defeated all enemies and won for Himself all authority.
When we receive Jesus, we receive the power of His Spirit.
I have witnessed the power of the Holy Spirit in my life and Natalie’s.

When you TRULY receive the Holy Spirit it will transform you.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
TRUE salvation brings forth transformation.
If your moment of salvation didn’t produce transformation in your life there is a strong possibility that you have yet to receive salvation.

All the nations

Matthew 28:19 NKJV
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
It is significant that Matthew ended his Gospel with one more reference to the Gentile mission, challenging the Jewish Christians to lose their prejudices and unify the church. This also challenges us to break down any artificial boundaries erected by our culture. We must minister impartially. Jesus was an equal-opportunity Savior.
As Christians we should have no partiality or prejudice in our view toward others, especially as we seek to lead them to the king. Our task is to win people to Christ, helping them to find a new identity with God and his family. We must also teach one another practically, with the goal of encouraging others to obey all of Jesus’ teachings.
Warren Wiersbe writes:
An activity (vv. 19–20a). The Greek verb translated go is actually not a command but a present participle (going). The only command in the entire Great Commission is “make disciples” (“teach all nations”). Jesus said, “While you are going, make disciples of all the nations.” No matter where we are, we should be witnesses for Jesus Christ and seek to win others to Him (Acts 11:19–21).
If you are a follower of Jesus Christ you are called to share the gospel to ALL nations.
2 Corinthians 5:20 NKJV
Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.
We can’t reach the unchurched in church.

We must convert then baptize.
Stuart Weber writes:
Baptism represents the identification of people with this new way of life and faith. Baptism should be experienced as soon as possible after a person trusts Christ.

All Things

Matthew 28:20 NKJV
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Warren Wiersbe writes:
It is not enough to win people to the Saviour; we must also teach them the Word of God. This is also a part of the Great Commission.
This is an area that I am learning on the fly.
With over 30 salvations at cr in 2022 alone.
explain the struggle.
It is not enough to say a prayer.
Yes that is a start.
But there’s more.
Billy Graham said that 85% of people in pews on Sunday morning are headed for hell.
Let me add that they don’t even know it.
Matthew 7:21–23 NKJV
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Clay’s paraphrase
One thing that is lost in churches today is the repenting of sins.
It’s not taught because of our own desires to have our ears scratched.
2 Timothy 4:2–4 NKJV
Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
I say all this today because I love you and I want each of you to make it to the party in heaven where we will get to worship Jesus for eternity.
I have some very good news to share with you today.
If you commit your life to Jesus, He will never leave you.
Matthew ends His gospel with this awesome promise.
I am with you always!
Please bow your heads.
As you sit there I want you to think very hard, has there ever been a time when you truly became a new creation.
If that’s you then do not be ashamed. Please raise your hand.
