This is my Bible. It is God’s Holy Word. It is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path, and I will hide its words within my heart that I might not sin against God! Amen!!!
Open Bibles To: Isaiah 55:10-11
Today, we begin a new series within our series. Isn’t that exciting. I don’t about you, but the time we spent on prayer over the last several weeks was good for my heart. I have been convicted over prayer more the last month or two, than in quite some time. We need to pray; We should pray; We are missing out if we don’t pray. Especially last week! Praying in the will of God, by praying the Word of God.
As I stated last week, we are moving on to our third letter of the acronym TEMPO. We have already discussed Oneness, and Praise/Prayer. We are moving on to the letter T, which stands for “Teaching”.
That’s right! For the next couple of weeks, we are going to focus on the Word of God. My goodness! I cannot explain how excited I am for this. I love the Word of God. I love to read the Word of God. I love to watch others read and study the Word of God. There is something special about the words written within this book. It does something to you when you allow it to penetrate your heart. It will change you for the better.
Last week, we spoke about praying through the Word. We used that message as a transition to bring us into this next topic. Why is the Word of God so important? Why should we use it as we pray unto God? What gives it that much weight? Why do people say that reading the Bible is the most important thing a person can do?
That is what I want to try to explain today. I want to speak to you today on this topic: The Sovereignty of God’s Word! That is the title: The Sovereignty of God’s Word
Isaiah 55:10–11 ESV
10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

Context

What do we mean when we say: Sovereignty?
When something is sovereign, it means that it has ultimate power or authority.
When a person is sovereign, it means that they are the supreme ruler over everyone and everything.
When we say that the Bible is sovereign, we mean that its words have the ultimate authority over everything else in the existence of this world.
Authority over what other people say, regardless of their position or title.
Authority over what Satan says.
Authority over us.
Authority over our preferences.
Authority over our predispositions.
Authority over our desires.
Authority over our thoughts.
Authority over our words.
Authority over our feelings and emotions.
It has ultimate authority over all things.
Some people do not want to hear that. Some people do not like the fact of not being in charge, or not having authority over their own life.
Can I just tell you that the thought of being in control is nothing more than an illusion. There is no such thing.
Kids cannot wait to grow up so they can be their own boss.
Young adults bask in their so-called freedom for a short while, but then sooner or later they wake up to reality and realize that there will always be some form of authority over almost every aspect of their lives.
Middle-aged adults long for retirement, thinking that once they retire, they will not have to be under a boss anymore. They won’t have to punch a clock anymore, follow crazy rules anymore, get up or go to bed at a certain time anymore.
From what I have been told, they too get a reality check. I hear many of the older people say that the closer you get to death, the more you think about it. The more you begin to acknowledge that you never have been in control. You never really did have control of anything. God was always in control, and always will be. And whether you like it or not, you are going to meet Him soon.
See, there is no such thing as worldly freedom. The only freedom that one can truly experience is to live in subjection to God. How can living in submission to something else be considered freedom? Because He is in control, He loves me, He has prepared a place for me, and if I will devote my physical life to Him for a short time here on this earth, I will experience an ultimate freedom in Him for all eternity.
I want to show you today what role the Word of God has to play in all of this. I want to show you why it matters so much, and why it should be something that gets the utmost priority in our lives.

It Is The Literal Word Of God

1 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV
13 And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
Apostle Paul commended those within the church at Thessalonia because they received his word as the literal word of God.
The words contained within this book are not just mere words from random men.
The Bible is not just a history book. It does contain history, but it is so much more than that.
The little books within this book, are not just a collection of like-minded individuals that have been compiled together into one big book over a period of time.
The fact that over forty men, throughout the existence of mankind, all wrote seamlessly about the same God without contradiction, is as much of a coincidence as this world leaping into existence without a creator.
These words are not just black ink on white paper, they are the literal words of God Himself.
There is no other way to explain the infallibility of this book.
There is no other way to explain the inerrancy of this book.
There is no other way to explain the life-changing nature of this book.
There is no other way to explain the power contained within this book.
There is no other way to explain the historical accuracy of this book.
There is no other way to explain the spiritual accuracy of this book.
There is no other way to explain the existence of this book.
This book must be the Word of God. This book IS the Word of God.
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Every single word contained within these pages was breathed out by God Himself. As God spoke, His Spirit led these men to write His words down and then pass them down from generation to generation.
This is the literal Word of God.
Sometimes I wonder how many truly believe that. Do you believe that? Do you understand the weight of those words? This is the literal Word of God!!! Do you understand what that means?
God spoke and all of creation leapt into existence.
God breathed and Adam became a living being.
God spoke and the heavens opened up and flooded the entire world.
God spoke and the rains stopped and receded so that Noah could get off the boat.
God spoke and the rainbow jumped into the sky.
God spoke and Abraham and Sarah had a child at 90 years old.
God spoke and interpreted dreams and visions for Joseph.
God spoke and his law was created.
God spoke and fiery serpents came upon Israel.
God spoke and manna rained down from heaven for Moses.
God spoke and water came from a rock for Moses.
God spoke and the walls of Jericho came tumbling down for Joshua.
God spoke and the sun stood still for Hezekiah.
God spoke and fire rained down from heaven for Elijah.
God spoke and shut the mouths of the lions for Daniel.
God spoke and the valley of dry bones came to life for Ezekiel.
God spoke and a virgin named Mary gave birth to a baby boy.
When Jesus spoke, water was turned into wine.
When Jesus spoke, two fish and five loaves fed thousands of people.
When Jesus spoke, the wind and waves obeyed Him.
When Jesus spoke, blind eyes were made to see; deaf ears were made to hear; lepers were cleansed; the crippled got up and walked.
When Jesus spoke, Lazarus came hopping out of that grave with his grave clothes still on.
Do you see it? It is the Word of God!!! When God speaks, things happen. When God speaks, lives are changed.
If God’s Word could do all of this, can it not accomplish things in our lives as well?
When God spoke, Noah built a boat in the middle of the desert.
When God spoke, Abraham left home and traveled to a strange land.
When God spoke, David became a king.
When God spoke, Moses lead Israel out of bondage.
When God spoke, Gideon led Israels armies into battle.
When God spoke, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Daniel, and so many more prophesied.
When Jesus spoke, Peter got out of a boat and walked on water.
When Jesus spoke, James and John put down their nets.
When Jesus spoke, Matthew quit collecting taxes.
When Jesus spoke, Andrew, Mark, Luke, Simon, and more uprooted their lives to follow Jesus.
When Jesus spoke, Paul quit persecuting the church and started preaching for the church.
If all of these men listened to the Word of God, obeyed the Word the God, and lived according to the Word of God, should we not do the same.
If it was good enough for them, is it not good enough for us?
When these men gave their lives to the Word of God, they accomplished amazing things for the kingdom of God. We can too, if we are willing to do what they did. We can too, if we believe as they believed. We must believe that this is the living, breathing Word of God.
If that is ever settled in your heart, you will make a difference for the kingdom of God.

It Is Eternal

Mark 13:31 ESV
31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Isaiah 40:8 ESV
8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
God is eternal, therefore His words must also be eternal.
This is good news! That means His promises of yesterday remain today.
I never have to doubt whether His word applies to my current situation or circumstances. His Word is always valid, because it never fades away.
It is the one constant in my life. Therefore, it should be the one thing that I give priority to in my life.
By reading it consistently, it keeps me focused on eternity, instead of the temporal.
Philippians 2:14–16 ESV
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
2 Corinthians 4:16–18 NKJV
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

It Is Spirit And Life

John 6:63 ESV
63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
The battle between good and evil will always exist within us. That is why we need something that will sway the outcome.
Galatians 5:16–17 ESV
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
The Word of God strengthens the Spirit inside of me and allows the Spirit to overcome the flesh. I need this in my life.
John 10:10 ESV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

It Is Truth

John 17:17 ESV
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
God’s Word is truth. We are sanctified by that truth.
To be sanctified means to grow. It literally means to take baby steps through a growth process.
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Proverbs 30:5 ESV
5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Psalm 119:160 ESV
160 The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

It Is Jesus

John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
