Purpose of Book

The purpose of Revelation is to challenge/encourage believers, who are expectantly awaiting the reign of Christ, to live faithfully for Him despite worldly circumstances, persecution, and the cosmic battle between God and Satan.

Main Point

Persevere in faith and do not drink from the wine of Babylon.

Those who align themselves with Babylon are destined for destruction, but those in Christ will enter rest

Revelation 14:6-7 - The First Angel

6 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.

Both commands

There are two sides of the Gospel - Grace and judgment

This is referring to the last judgment

And worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.

Clear reference back to Genesis as God creator

Revelation 14:8 - The Second Angel

8 Another angel, a second, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.”

Another angel, a second, followed, saying,

Fallen, fallen reveals that the city has just fallen

Babylon is the godless nation seen in the Old Testament

Both Isaiah and Jeremiah prophesy her doom

She does fall in 539 BC

Babylon is also used thematically throughout the Bible as godless cities to come in the future - Rome here, but also all ungodly cities against the Lord Jesus

Babylon, Rome, makes the world commit adultery against the Lord because there is only one true God

Babylon, explicitly, is introduced here and will be brought back later in Revelation

Revelation 14:9-11 - The Third Angel

9 And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice,

If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand,

This goes beyond economic - it is allegiance to the dragon

He also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur

The punishment given to these individuals is total and devoid of mercy

Those who drink from Babylon’s idolatry will now drink from the wrath of God

In the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.

Those who rejected Christ will be forced to recognize Him as they are punished in His presence

Revelation 14:12-13 - Endurance and Blessing

The warnings given in the previous verses are meant to PROVOKE believers to obedience

Endurance is a necessary aspect for the Christ-follower

Those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

Keeping the commandments of God and faith in Jesus REVEALS their endurance

There will be visible evidence for a true Christ-follower - those who are in Christ will be obedient to Him

13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”

“Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”

The works Christ-followers do on earth MATTER
