Hebrews 1:4-9 - The Name Of Jesus

INTRODUCTION - What do you think of when you think of angels? cupid picture??? real picture????

Jesus’ name is better than any others.

Hebrews 1:4 ESV

4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

having - perfect

become - position, not temporal.- Hebrews 2:9 “9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.”

It goes from God > Angels > Man.

This talks about after the resurrection.

HAHA - something about become better......

much superior - far above. BETTER. but adds in another word. So far and away better.

Theme of the book. To understand that, we need to understand Jewish mindset towards Angels.

ANGELS - Thought highly of angels. “every blade of grass has its angels. “ Jewish throught. Similar to hinu view of their gods.

They provided the OT covenant.

Name - Can also refer to a title. Philippians 2 . What name, the name of son. There are lots of Joshua’s Michah, and Levi but there are only three sons. Before the incarnation he did not have that name.

God then angels, then men. So Jesus was made lower than angels for a time is now lifted up above the angels.

Will you lay down your name for the sake of Jesus?

Most of us don’t struggle with angels, but in our culture we are very important.

Hebrews 1:5 ESV

5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”?

to which - none. The answer is none. From Psalm 2:7.

begotten you -

Jesus’ position is higher than any others.

Hebrews 1:6 ESV

6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”

brings the firstborn into the world - God brought him, doesn’t say he created him.

Let all God’s - all means all. It would have said all others.

Worship him. Angels can’t sin, to worship something other than God would be sinful. Duet 32:43

Hebrews 1:7 ESV

7 Of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.”

Angels are awesome - Psalms 104.

Hebrews 1:8 ESV

8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.

Your throne, O God, - If the father calls the son God, then he should be God.

9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”

have loved - perfect.

righteouness

wickedness - God hates. He Hates sin. He hates wickedness. Cause how can you be good without hating evil.

The joy that was set before him??

Therefore - God did the next thing because of his righteousness.

has anointed you - same greek root as Christ. He is the annointed one.

gladness - wild joy, ecspacy.

Beyond your companions - my party was better than other kids parties.

Is Jesus greater than what you are facing?

CONCLUSION - name change story, now called Dad, which is better. Who is he to you? Is he your savior?
