I. The Occasion for Timothy’s Mission

A. When Paul Left

1 Timothy 1:3 (NASB95)
3 As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,
1. Paul and Timothy were together in Ephesus
2. Paul was leaving Ephesus for Macedonia
3. “Urged” We see the team dynamic. He and Timothy had a discussion about what was the best way to handle the pressing ministry. Paul treated Timothy as full team member not as an underling.

B. Where Timothy Stayed

1 tim 1 3 “3 As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,”
1. This is the plan they agreed on.
2. Ephesus
a. disciples of John
Acts 19:1 NASB95
1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.
b. school of Tyrannus
Acts 19:8–10 NASB95
8 And he entered the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. 9 But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 This took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
c. demon possession
Acts 19:13–17 NASB95
13 But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” 16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.
d. Books burned
Acts 19:18–20 NASB95
18 Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. 19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing.
e. Demetrius the silversmith
Acts 19:21-41

II. The Reason for Timothy’s Mission

A. Instruction Against False Doctrine

1 Timothy 1:3 (NASB95)
3 As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,
Acts 20:17 NASB95
17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church.
Acts 20:28–30 NASB95
28 “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

Examples of False Doctrine Today

by christwin.com

1. The prosperity gospel

Luke 12:15 NASB95
15 Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”

2. Positive thinking

New age philosophy that God is obligated to manifest what we envision in our minds.

3) Humans are Gods

This false doctrine says that because we are god like and bend the world to our design as God does. The world revolves around us.

4. The “Kingdom now” (John 18:36)

This gospel preaches that the kingdom is already there (on the earth) and that we must already reign here below, enjoy great financial and material wealth and experience great success in business.

5. The denial of the deity of Jesus Christ… (Hebrews 1:13)

According to certain religious currents, Jesus would be a prophet, a political figure, or a simple man who influenced his time.
Colossians 2:9 NASB95
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,

6. Serve with the angels

According to this doctrine, we would be called to exercise with the angels, to come into contact with them so that they can help us in the ministry.

7. Rewritten Bible

Don’t be surprised to see “gay-friendly” Bibles like the Queen Bible James.  Certain influential ministries do not hesitate to rewrite the Bible according to their thinking and their own interpretation. The reason: the Lord would have given them the order. However, we read in the Bible that it is forbidden for any man to modify the text. Bethel church, Bill Johnson (Bethel music), Hillsong church (Founder Brian Houston), (Carl Lentz) (Hillsong music)
Instruct: military term for orders passed from one solder to the next.
If it is a “new” doctrine or a new teaching that someone says God show only to them, RUN AWAY!!

B. Instruction Against Non-Bibilical Stories

1 Timothy 1:4 (NASB95)
4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.
Myths=stories
One such story that people believe is that Jesus travelled and studied under Buddha.
Jesus as a boy miraculously killed another boy for tripping him.
Jesus married Mary Magdalen.
A popular myth is that the universe began super condensed ball of mass and energy with no apparent source. This ball exploded, hurling matter and energy out into the deadness of space. Big bang.
Endless genealogies:
Possibly Jewish genealogies that were thought of to have deeper meaning than just the names of the patriarchs.
Another genealogy popular today is traces human development through stages of gradual development from lower life forms.

C. Instruction Against Speculations

1 Timothy 1:4 (NASB95)
4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.

D. Instruction Against Distractions

1 Timothy 1:4 NASB95
4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.
The administration of God which is by faith is the work of the universal church which visible through individual local churches.
Colossians 1:25 NASB95
25 Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God,
Anything that distracts us from the work of the local church in making disciples is to be avoided and ignored.
