I. Introduction

Today I want to deal with an issue in our culture that is disturbing to say the least. Not just because it is an issue with the culture at large, that is from people who are not Christians, but because it is pervasive even in Christian culture in our nation. Many a pastor or church personality has fallen from grace as a result of sexual immorality. Recently we have heard of the sexual misconduct of men like Bill Hybels, Tony Alamo, Ted Haggard, Brian Houston, Carl Lentz, Jeremy Foster, and even the late Ravi Zacharias. Yet, My concern is not so much with the mega pastors or mega church personalities, but with us right here on the ground level of church, and to try to briefly warn us about what the Word of God says about sexual immorality.

II. Flee Sexual Immorality

1 Corinthians 6:18 ESV
18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
BDAG Definition of sexual immorality - unlawful sexual intercourse, prostitution, unchastity, fornication
Ephesians 5:3 ESV
3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.
1 Corinthians 6:13–20 ESV
13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

III. The Apostle’s warning

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 ESV
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

IV. The judgment of the church

A. The case of incest

1 Corinthians 5:1–5 ESV
1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. 3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

B. General church judgment for the guilty

1 Corinthians 5:9–13 ESV
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
