I. We must be washed!

John 13:4–10 KJV 1900
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. 8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

A. We are cleansed by the Word of God!

John 15:3 KJV 1900
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
John 17:17 KJV 1900
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Ephesians 5:26 KJV 1900
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

1. The Word of God knows the best way to clean us!

2. The Word of God is sharper than a 2 edged sword and knows the exact places to cut in our lives.

Hebrews 4:12 KJV 1900
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

a. The word of God has to be accepted or rejected.

John 12:48 KJV 1900
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
Matthew 10:32–33 KJV 1900
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

B. In order to make it to Heaven we must be washed by the water!

John 3:5 KJV 1900
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
1 Peter 3:21 KJV 1900
21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
1 John 5:6–8 KJV 1900
6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

1. We need to be baptized in order to be saved!

2. The washing of regeneration and the infilling of the Holy Ghost according to His mercy is what saves us!

Titus 3:5 KJV 1900
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

a. What I am preaching and teaching today is not a work that we can do, but it is a work that only His spirit can do through our obedience!

II. Washing feet and how it applies to us today.

A. Why did Jesus wash the disciples feet?

1. Simple fact is he washed their feet because they were dirty.

a. He had the disciples prepare everything except for provisioning a servant to wash everyones feet, which was the custom.

i. Jesus put Himself in the place of that servant and washed ALL of their feet, including Judas!
ii. It is clear that Jesus washed their feet AFTER they ate.
iii. None of the disciples, it seems, even considered stooping to the place of washing the other people at the tables feet. It could be speculated that they did not because that would cause them to have to stoop to a lower level of society than they were willing at that moment to go to.
iv. But after Jesus did it, you find the practice introduce in the very beginning of the church. In fact, they felt so strongly about it that they made participation in foot washing a part of the qualification for a widow to be able to receive help from the church.
1 Timothy 5:9–10 KJV 1900
9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
v. Humility is a huge key in succeeding in the kingdom of God!
1 Peter 5:5–7 KJV 1900
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

2. This night there was a need, but it required that someone humbled themselves to complete the job.

a. In the kingdom of God there are many jobs to be accomplished, but sometimes we do not want to lower ourselves to the positions that would be required in order to complete the job that God has called us to do!

b. It will be uncomfortable for us to humble ourselves to those positions, but when we do the rewards from the One who called us are limitless!

James 4:5–10 KJV 1900
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

c. Happiness comes when we yield ourselves to these things that God has called us to, He gave us this example to follow!

John 13:12–17 KJV 1900
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
