A. Six Types of Swearing The Real Meaning of Oaths & Swearing
1. Swearing by oaths
a.
Jesus was put upon His oath—Matthew 26:63 and Paul swore by taking and oath—2Corinthians 1:23; Galatians 1:20
b.
A man’s word should be trustworthy that no oath is necessary.
c. His character should be his guarantee.
2.
Habitual swearing—Unworthy of serious attention.
a.
The unrighteous are said to have “mouths full of cursing and bitterness”—Romans 3:10-14
3.
Hypocritical swearing
a.
There are those who “bless God” in one breath and turn around and “curse men” the next breath
But no man can tame the tongue.
/It is/ an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.
Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.
My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

Silent wearing

This is secretly cursing others “within your heart.”
For many times, also, your own heart has known That even you have cursed others.

Evasive swearing—choosing words that seem less harsh—stupid, four eyes, bonehead

This is swearing to boost your ego-your manliness—You feel cussing makes you more of a man

The Law Was Based On The Third Commandment
Exodus 20:7… Leviticus 19:12… Deuteronomy 23:23… Numbers 30:2
The law was much to narrow for man, so he decided to interpret it to his likening so he could swear & curse as much as he wanted.
Not 2 Significant points:
1. God gave the law to men…
a.
To keep man from dishonoring God by falsely calling upon His name or by cursing Him
b.
To keep man from showing himself to be a liar & an unstable person
c.
To keep man from treating others unjustly
2. The law was given to govern man from…
a.
Lying and then swearing that one is telling the truth.
b. Making a false vow to God
c. Making a false vow to another person, promising something and not doing it.
d. /Using God’s name in vain.
So many use God’s name as a slang or curse word.
Note—this person will stand especially guilty before God—Exodus 20:7/

We Are Not To Swear By Any Oath
!!! Scripture says that it is better not to vow that to vow and not pay
When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For /He has/ no pleasure in fools.
Pay what you have vowed--Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.
(Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 NKJV)
— *Acts 5:1-11-*A vow to God puts the man in debt to God.
To break a vow is an act of lying to God
— A vow to man puts the man in debt to man—To break his vow is an act of injustice to man.

Do not swear by heaven, for it is God’s throne: the place where His Glory is manifested

To swear by heaven or to curse heaven is to swear by God and to curse God.
Thus says the LORD: "Heaven /is/ My throne, And earth /is/ My footstool.
Where /is/ the house that you will build Me?
And where /is/ the place of My rest?

Do not swear by earth, for the earth is God’s footstool: the place He governs and looks over
The earth /is/ the LORD'S, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.

Do not swear by any other oath, for all power belongs to God

Whatever power a man thinks he has, it can be taken away from him at any moment.
Therefore he does not have the power to keep oaths.
D.
Let Your “Yes” be “Yes”—Your “No” be “No” A Guarantee
1.
Our word is to stand alone & be true—nothing more than, “Yes I will” or “No, I will not”
2. The way we live should be so honest & straight that no one would question our word
3. Swearing or cursing does not make a matter more believable but more suspicious
4. A person swears something because his or her character is questionable
a.
Christians are to be the salt of the earth—Matthew 5:13
b. Christians are to let their yes be yes & their no be no & anything else is evil—Matthew 5;37
c. Christians speech is to be seasoned with grace & salt—Colossians 4:6
d.
We are to have a life of good works, in doctrine showing integrity, sound speech that we may not be condemned, that our opponents may have nothing evil to say of us—Titus 2:7-8

Swearing By Profanity

Exodus 20:7—God Will Hold This Person Guiltless

This is from the Devil himself
1) Using God’s name in a profane way, or a way of a slang word, desensitizes us to the real awe in which we should stand of his name.
2) Do you ever here someone say, “devil damn it”?

No matter what circumstance come our way, we are to combat them by prayer not worry—Phil.4:6
2. We must seek God in times of suffering, allowing Him to work in our lives so we respond properly.
