Forgiveness from Jesus
Luke 7:40-50
08-28-2022
Intro -
Welcome
Last week spoke how you and I are to be prepared for the coming of Christ
That even after knowing that you are to be prepared there are still some people who want to role the dice of sorts
They don’t want to be prepared
Or maybe they need sometime to wrap their minds around the fact that God would pay their debt of sin
And to pay the debt is one thing but to offer forgiveness and restoration is added to it
That is exactly what Jesus does for us
I know we have said it but there is forgiveness at the Cross for the Sinner
Luke 7:40–43 NASB95
40 And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 “When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
This is a dialogue between Jesus and Simon, this is not Peter
Jesus gives him the parable of the two debtors
2 people owed different amounts and they are both forgiven their debt
Jesus asks which do you think would love the person who forgave their debt more
Simon answered and we would probably agree the one who had more forgiven
Jesus says you are absolutely correct
That makes so much sense right
If you owe me 1 dollar and you owe me 100,000 dollars and i forgive them both right now
We would probably all agree that one who owed 100,000 dollars would love the forgiver more because the debt was greater
And Simon understood that
James 2:10 NASB95
10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
Wether you have sinned only once in your life or like most of us here have sinned for sometime
You are guilty of the whole law and the whole punishment will be dealt down because of that sin
Do you understand that just because you think you have little sin in your life doesn’t mean the punishment is any less than someone else
But as we will see when Jesus continues the conversation that for those of us who have taken stock of our lives and understand we have sinned much and because of Christ we have been forgiven much
That will do something inside us to compel us to love much
Jesus now takes the parable of the two debtors that is distance and something we can just talk about and now puts it to practice
Luke 7:44–49 NASB95
44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 “You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 “You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 “For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?”
This man would have been high and mighty and had status
He would have understood he needed to have someone clean Jesus’s feet and yet he didn’t
This would have also been a status thing
For him to have missed it would not have been good
This man knew he was supposed to have someone to wash Jesus’s feet or at least offer Jesus water
He missed that step but in his mind it is a small mishap and that his overall good will outweigh his one misstep
Romans 3:10 NASB95
10 as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one;
This morning where it is one sin or 100 sins you and I are all guilty of sin before God
And as we have said that punishment is death
In the Parable
Jesus is sort of public shaming the high and mighty and the religious elite in his own house
And Jesus is is lifting up those who are low
Matthew 20:16 NASB95
16 “So the last shall be first, and the first last.”
The man is guilty of things of omission or things he forgot or slipped his mind
The women is guilty of commission or breaking the law
The question is which one do you think will love the forgiver more
Remember both are guilty
It is important to note that all the things the high and mighty forgot she did and she did it better right
last week it was all about the coming of Christ
And just like the man and the women in this story they stand guilty
Just like them you and I are guilty
And then notice what Jesus does towards the end
Jesus forgives the women of her sin even though they are many
Those who are at the party ask who can forgive sins
Jesus is sort of holding back the curtain on who He really is
Jesus is the one who can forgive sins!
That is a truth that we will see unfold as we dig in a little deeper this morning
Some of those things we need to take a closer look at
How many sins are needed to be to many
Is there a number
I think we often grade our sin and sort of judge people like well look at that guy I am not doing that so I must be doing ok
When in all actuality we are still a sinner
So no there is not a number
We serve a big and amazing God
God is big enough to handle the worlds sins and that is just what he did
Hebrews 10:10–12 NASB95
10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God,
No matter the amount of sin and no matter the sin God is big enough to deal with it to forgive it
That is what you and I need to understand this morning
Another we need to understand is that this women's deeds did not make Jesus forgive her
Right I think a lot of the time we like to think if I do this for Jesus then He will forgive me
Doesn’t work like that
This women in the story did not earn Jesus’s forgiveness by doing what Simon forgot to do
Which means you and I cannot stop earn Gods forgiveness
But we sure try right
We think coming to church will cover us by sins we forgot about
We think that if we give a little extra that somehow some way God is obligated to give us a little more forgiveness because
And when we do that it diminishes the work of forgiveness done on the cross
If we could earn Gods forgiveness for our sin like it said under the old law then Christ died for nothing
Galatians 2:21 NASB95
21 “I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”
But we know that is not true
So to think that the women in the story is forgiven because she loved on Christ in that way is absolutely wrong
She loved on Christ in such a way because she understood she was a sinner
She understood that no matter how much or how little sin you have in your life you are still guilty of death and separation from Christ
And she understood the only cure for that is Christ and Christ alone
Luke 7:50 NASB95
50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
Her faith in the living God has saved her
To believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the universe is part of the coming to a personal relationship with Christ
Her faith in Jesus saved her
Then He sends her out in peace
She found forgiveness in Christ and in Christ alone
Simon who was a religious leader was not saved under the law
Both were guilty of sin and because she knew how much of a sinner she was she loved greater and more
It wasn’t her act that saved her because she couldn’t earn Gods forgiveness
It was all God
But her actions are in response to being forgiven for so much!
CLOSING
As we come to a close this morning and move to a time of invitation
Maybe you are here this morning and you are not prepared for the coming of Christ
meaning you have never repented and trusted in the Lord to be your personal Lord and Savior
This means you will spend eternity separated away from God in a place called hell
And maybe you think
