Intro

Selfishness tempts us to seek our own glory

John 3:25–26 ESV
Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”
John had built an identity for himself. Not just John, but John the Baptist.
Jesus began to take that identity from him.
A selfish heart would push against that.
We make identities for ourselves
Jesus is going to ask you to surrender your identity.
Your selfish heart is going to push against that.

Christ is the only one worthy of glory

John 3:31–36 ESV
He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Why is Christ worthy of glory and we aren’t?
Christ is from heaven, we are from Earth
Jesus speaks the very words of God.
Jesus supplies the Spirit without measure
Whoever believers in him has eternal life.
Because of this, we ought to desire to glorify him.

We ought to seek the glory of Christ

John 3:28–30 ESV
You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He must increase, but I must decrease.”
What can we provide to others? What will our fame bring the world? Nothing but selfish gain.
What can Christ provide to others? What will his fame bring the world? Life!
In our influences and identities, we need to make ourselves disappear and point others to Christ.
FCF: Our selfishness tends towards wanting our own glory
CFC: As our faith in Christ grows, so does our desire to glorify him
discussion questions:
how can we be tempted to rob glory from God?
Why is it wrong to rob glory from God?
What does it look like to truly give glory to God?
