Heaven
Heaven is a free gift. “The wages of sin is death, BUT the free gift of God is eternal life...” Romans 6:23
It is not earned nor deserved — Gift analogy
—Man cannot earn nor deserve heaven because...
Man
Man is a sinner “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23
Man cannot save himself— Man cannot save himself because he himself is imperfect
— “I know I make mistakes, but am I really THAT bad?” Lets look at it. (Paint Illustration)
God
God is merciful-therefore He does not want to punish us Ezekiel 33:11 “Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?”
—But God is perfect, and heaven is perfect.
God is just- therefore He must punish our sins (Good Judge with the evidence of sins)
— And if someone says to you “how could God be so mean?” There are consequences for actions. Do murderers choose to kill? Do thieves choose to steal? Do liars choose to lie? There you go. We choose to be corrupt, but we think we get the right to say God cannot choose to punish?? If we can make choices, can a sovereign God not make choices as well? Also, heaven is a perfect place. PERFECT!! Do you know what happens when imperfection is let inside? It is no longer perfect. Do you see why God must punish sin?
But if God destroyed everyone that was imperfect, how does anyone go to heaven? I’ll tell you how.
Jesus
Who is He?
the infinite God-man
John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
14. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
What did He do?
He died on the cross and rose from the dead to pay the penalty for our sins and to purchase a place in heaven for us.
—Record book of sins.
Faith
What faith is not
Trusting in head knowledge- Do you believe in George Washington? Is he actively helping you now? No. Why? He’s dead. Knowing about someone is not enough.
James 2:19 “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”
Trusting in temporary things- Temporary faith is placing trust in God to get you through a scary event (illness, flying, a boat ride, car accident) but forgetting about Him when you are on the other side.
What it is
Trusting Jesus for eternal life— Trusting in Jesus means you grasp all of the above. That heaven exists, but because of our sin we cannot go. We cannot go because God must punish sins. But God wants us to be there so Jesus Christ, who is God as well, gave His life so that we might keep ours. If we will only trust that Jesus is the Son of God, and believe that He died and rose again to pay for our sins, and give us a place in heaven for us, we will be saved. Put your faith in Him and His sacrifice, and you will be good to go.
