Third address for Moses after the blessings and curses of the previous chapters.
2-9 Remembering God’s past grace today.
A important reminder to me, and should be for you is this.. Remembrance is key to obedience.
In verses 2-9 we see Moses telling them what the Lord has done for them.
1st he says YOU HAVE SEEN… 10 plagues… Water turned into blood, Frogs, Gnats, Flies, Livestock die, Boils, Hail, Locusts, Darkness, Death of Firstborn.
They had the Pillar of Cloud and Fire Guide them, they crossed the red sea. Got bread from heaven, Water from the Rock, where giving the 10 commands, and so much more.
The bad about Israel seeing all these miracles was they expected it over, and over again, so when God doesn’t do these things they should remember what God had done before their eyes. Remember Remembrance is key to obedience.
And so now Israel is transitioning into a different way, up until this point they were being led by God, and Moses, they did not have the understanding like they are about to.
One of the proofs of God’s grace in this text is that there their clothes, and sandals never worn out.
Deuteronomy 8:4 ESV
4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.
If you remember many months ago I talked about how eating the same thing over and over again can cause your feet to swell up, and God’s grace extends out even there.
Also they did not get to eat the things they were accustomed to as well, but all this took place because the Lord wanted them yo know that the Lord is their God.
And the evidence of who he is, and what he has done including conquering other kingdoms was a reminder to keep the covenant they had.
We must Remember the Gospel…
Examples to us.. Baptism, Lord’s Supper, Gathering on the Lord’s day…
What examples of grace help you in your own faith?
10-15. Oath of the Covenant.
Here in the text we see everyone is participating in this oath they are making before the Lord, and this oath is even for those who are not with them as well, and this oath is rooted in the promises that were giving to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And this oath is taking to symbolize that Israel belongs to the Lord.

The oath in v.12 is like the oath to Abraham, and the formation of Israel as the people of God (v.13) is in fulfillment of the promise to Abraham.

16-17 Learning from the godless nations.
The godlessness of the nations should be motivation to live for the Lord.
Personal consequences of being unfaithful 18-21
Moses Warns against tolerating an individual in their midst who goes against God, and warns against the dangers of idolatry.
v18 has a warning BEWARE x2 and he is telling them to beware of those who turn their heart away from the Lord, and serve other gods… What a strong warning to even us…
v19.. is wreck-less way to live before the Lord. And the text gives a good illustration this will lead to the sweeping away of moist and dry alike. A good illustration of verse 19 is…
Jeremiah 17:5–8 ESV
5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
There is a warning to Israel that if they abandon the covenant with God, God will destroy them.
Geographic consequences of being unfaithful. 22-28
22-23 Sodom and Gomorrah are examples of judgement.
Sulphur represents something that sterilizes the soil.
salt makes the land infertile, In wars thousands of years ago, people would spread salt to make lands not fertile for the enemy.
Burning is pretty self explanatorily. The Result

nothing sown and nothing growing, where no plant can sprout

Why does this happen because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, he is telling them you can’t expect good things to happen if you are not faithful.
v29… God does what he wants, but gives his people what they need…
What happened to Isreal? Shortly after moses, and Joshua died this happened.
Judges 2:10–11 ESV
10 And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel. 11 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals.
Why did this happened, because they had forgot what the Lord did for them?
This is a pattern that happens in the old testament, they kept forgetting the Lord. And the Lord kept sending people to remind them of what he did.
1 Kings 9:4–9 ESV
4 And as for you, if you will walk before me, as David your father walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that I have commanded you, and keeping my statutes and my rules, 5 then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’ 6 But if you turn aside from following me, you or your children, and do not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight, and Israel will become a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 8 And this house will become a heap of ruins. Everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?’ 9 Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the Lord their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore the Lord has brought all this disaster on them.’ ”
But they didn’t walk faithfully, as the prophet Jeremiah warned them in
Jeremiah 22:6–9 ESV
6 For thus says the Lord concerning the house of the king of Judah: “ ‘You are like Gilead to me, like the summit of Lebanon, yet surely I will make you a desert, an uninhabited city. 7 I will prepare destroyers against you, each with his weapons, and they shall cut down your choicest cedars and cast them into the fire. 8 “ ‘And many nations will pass by this city, and every man will say to his neighbor, “Why has the Lord dealt thus with this great city?” 9 And they will answer, “Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and worshiped other gods and served them.” ’ ”
What happened overtime is the people of Israel became hardened like it says in Isaiah 6:9-10
Isaiah 6:9–10 ESV
9 And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “ ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ 10 Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”
Paul himself quotes Dt 29:4 in Romans 11:8
Romans 11:8 ESV
8 as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”
because they had become so hardened to God.
Deuteronomy 29:4 ESV
4 But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.
How does this apply to us?
We have a responsibility to follow Jesus covenant.
John 13:34–35 ESV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
We have a responsibility to fulfill the mission of God.
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
