Its A Doggy Dog World
INTRODUCTION:
Church at Philippi—This was a good church.
Paul was writing to tell them to beware of some things.
One thing that struck me rather unusual is the verse for our text in which Paul said: “Beware of dogs.”
The context seems to favor the view that these were converted Jews who were attempting to turn Christianity back to Judaism.
Judaizers insisted that salvation comes by the works of the law.
Paul describes these Jews as dogs, a term which the Jews themselves applied to the Gentiles.
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.
In Scripture “dog” is commonly used as a word of contempt, reproach, or dread.
The writer may have had in mind the pariah dogs (Stray Dog) of the East, which, half-wild, feed on leftover garbage.
Like them these Judaizers are feeding on the garbage of Jewish and fleshly ceremonial act or action.
They are evil workers, or “deceitful workers,” men who work supposedly for the gospel, but actually are working for evil.
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
Today I want to say the same things to you: “Beware of some dogs in the church.”
I. BEWARE OF THE FEIST
Irritable or grumpy
From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
“From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”
This is the kind of Dog that will set on the front porch until he sees a lot of other dogs come along, then he will tear out after them and bark his head off and get a real good fight started, and when the going gets a little rough he runs and sits back down on the porch.
II. BEWARE OF THE BOSTON BULL
A Boston Bull will slip up behind you and the first thing you know he will have your leg, and as if that were not bad enough he will just keep hanging on.
The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
Backbiting - malicious talk about someone who is not present:
III. BEWARE OF THE POODLE.
The Poodle is a very pretty dog.
It struts up and down the sidewalk and thinks to itself, “What a pretty dog am I.”
Always has a lot of malicious talk about someone who is not present: and boastful of how clean it stays all the time.
Pride - consciousness of one's own dignity:
or state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect:
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
IV. BEWARE OF THE BASSET HOUND.
The Basset Hound is about the laziest dog you can think about. Even his appearance makes you tired to look at him.
The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
V. BEWARE OF THE GERMAN SHEPHERD.
A German Shepherd is the most sneaky dog there is. He can sneak around and do things and you will never know about it. This is why he was used in the war many times.
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
VI. TWO KINDS OF DOGS WE NEED.
1. The Shepherd Dog: The dog that looks after the flock. The pastor. He is supposed to see that no harm comes to the sheep, To watch over them, to protect them.
And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the Lord, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;
2. The Beagle: He is one of the best hunting dogs there is. They will go into the thickest bushes to find the game, no matter how wet, muddy or rough the terrain, they are anxious to go.
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
CONCLUSION:
WHICH KIND ARE YOU?
