16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
There are consistent warnings throughout
The warning was
We are all influenced by someone
We talk about music that influences
We talk about media
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
As the Bridegroom’s friend, Paul was eager to bring the Corinthian church to the Bridegroom of souls. But false teachers disturbed the purity and simplicity of their faith, as in Eden Satan perverted Eve.
These warnings were warnings about being influenced by men in the church, false doctrines
4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
Enticing words
Enticing words = alluring you away from truth
Words that cause you to leave Biblical Doctrine
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
2. vs 8 philosophy = Love of wisdom
humanism causes the church to lose it’s biblical world view
There are good things that are taught in secular schools = but if you are not careful, mixed in is worldly teaching, humanism, false doctrine, lies
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
Your Bible is the final authority for your life
If we are not careful we can be swayed into worldly false philosophies that pull us away from truth of Scripture
away from the fellowship of believers
For instance: Learning is wonderful - teaching is a great vocation - but if humanism is mixed in the curriculum, the hearts of Christian young people are stolen away from their first love, the Lord Jesus Christ
Falling in love with man’s wisdom is dangerous
for us spiritually
3. Vain deceit = Self image
You become your own idol
1 Corinthians 3:21 (KJV 1900)
21 Therefore let no man glory in men...
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
The world operates that way
The arm of flesh will always fail you
Men are just men, we are not supposed to glory in men in the church or outside the church
4. The Tradition of Men
Colossians 2:8 (KJV 1900)
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Man’s laws but they are
5. Rudiments of the world
Teachings not in God’s word
6. Let no man judge you
Colossians 2:16–17 (KJV 1900)
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
The pharisees added to God’s word.
Jews that were saved were trying to bring their law in the church about
Meat, drink, holy days,
Everyday is a sabbath day unto the Lord
Once a person is saved everyday can be a holy day unto God
We must not allow our religious life to become a piece of outward ritual, Col 2:16-17;
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Shadows of things to come
Jesus hadn’t come in the flesh in Old Testament
God showed pictures of Jesus in their institutional worship
Blood sacrifice = a shadow of the Lamb of God
that would shed His blood
Sabbath days = a shadow of the rest of God found in Jesus alone
The church was being influence to go back to the old testament and missing the purpose of those old testament pictures of what was to come
Unfortunately many today still cannot see past their religious activity to see the light of the Lord Jesus Christ.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Today we can still get all wrapped up in good works thinking that works wash away sin - works could never wash away sin
Romans 14:1–7 (KJV 1900)
1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
doubtful disputations = Debating
2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
This is what the church was being divided over
3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
4 Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
Some people are constantly wondering and questioning about such things, as though their eternal salvation depended on minute observances.
6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
The main principle for us all is to live and die to please our Lord. He is our Master, and it will be for Him to allot our rewards.
In the meantime let us not judge one another, but live in love, leaving each to work out the plan of his own life as his Master directs.
If a person honors a day and another doesn’t don’t judge a person
7. Let no man beguile you of your reward through voluntary humility
Colossians 2:18 (KJV 1900)
18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Beguile = rob you of your reward
False humility = a glorying in our ability to be humble
The pharisees would fast, give, pray = they would do all these things to be seen of men
The Lord encouraged us to do those good things secretly
They have their reward in the praise of men
8. Worshipping of angels
worshipping of angels,
We like the mystical in our flesh
trying to make more than what scripture says about the subject
We are not trying to be mystical at church
nor permit the supposed mediation of angels to obscure the supreme majesty of our Lord,
God told the apostle Paul
Mysticism brings us into places because we move away from the foundation of Scripture
intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
“He hath not seen” -
God wants us to know what we believe based on the foundation of the Word
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
We don’t want to get to the place where we are vainly puffed up.
If we share truth and it helps someone, there is no reason for us to glory
19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
When people read and study the writings of men without comparing everything to the word of God, there is a danger in placing men as the head of the church.
Ephesians 1:22 (KJV 1900)
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Not retaining Jesus as the Head of the Church
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
The enemy of the church loves to cause men to fight over leadership and power in the church.
19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
Jesus is the one that holds the church together
It’s His word that brings nourishment into our life
If you rely on people and things to strengthen you, you will be malnourished
20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
vs 21 is not saying that everything is ok for the Christian
Col 2:18-19. We who have died with Christ must not be always regulating ourselves by the don’ts of the Law. Let us enter Christ’s more intimate fellowship and live on the positive side. Ours should be the freedom of a full life, and the ampler vision of the mountains. Nothing else really avails against the indulgence of the flesh.
23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Will worship = doing spiritual works by the power of the flesh
serving, giving,
Be careful saying something is God when it’s your will or your flesh
Teaching men’s commandments and ideas
Teaching men’s preferences as the Bible
Complete In Thee
The Bible is our guide
In me there dwelleth no good thing
We don’t need man’s ideas
We don’t need man’s ideas about salvation
If you have never been born again, you cannot go to heaven Jesus said
