Here we are gang, the end of the chapter. And the end of chapter one is a launching point for their rest of the book. We will see that’s Jesus sets it all up. Are you ready? The chapter ends with a declaration by the LORD of His power and dominion. There is comfort here and a warning and lastly a roadmap specific to the book of Revelation. Admittedly, that’s a lot for two verses but here we go. Thank you for joining me for this message I’ve entitled: It’s Not a Mystery. Let’s pray….
Revelation 1:18 (NKJV): I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death
In verse 18, Jesus declares His victory and power, “I am He who lives and was dead.” Here He declares the resurrection from the dead. His death on the cross defeated sin, He was the perfect sacrifice. The resurrection defeated death. This is a victory all believers have a part in. We are reminded of this again as we read the last part of this verse. “And I have the keys to Hades and Death.
This isn’t a passing power, like that we give to our politicians; something that comes and goes like the wind every two, four, or six years. No! This is dominion. Jesus, by His death and resurrection has defeated the devil all of his plans, death, and the grave for all time. Those that have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior can and should rejoice at this declaration.
Bible students know that Jesus spoke of his dominion many times through out His ministry. Turn with me to Numbers 21: 4-9. Hold your place there and turn to John 3:14-15
Starting in Numbers:
4 Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” 6 So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
8 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
God made the Israelites look upon their sin and in that moment of humility and repentance they were saved. Sound familiar? It should. John 3:14-15.
John 3:14–15 (NKJV): And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
The serpent in the wilderness is a picture of Jesus. He is commanding that we look upon Him and acknowledge his power.
Jesus spoke of His dominion as well. Look at John 3:16 and Matthew 14:6 for homework.
I have heard more than once from pastors and men of God, “the book of Revelation is not meant for us to understand, it’s a mystery. It will be reviewed to us at the end. This one is my favorite, “We don’t teach on it because it brings up to many questions.”
That last one always makes me shake my head. If the logic for not becoming a student of the whole counsel of God lies in not wanting to face questions, perhaps we can apply that to the Bible as a whole. The truth is, sadly, often times this is what happens and the solution, and salvation found in the pages of Gods word gathers dust on a shelf. Friends, the number of bibles you have in your home does not equal your likelihood of salvation, the amount of good things you do in this world does not equal salvation. Only a relationship with Jesus Christ ensures salvation.
Revelation 1:19 (NKJV): Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.
Jesus, lays out the outline for what is to com precisely so that we may understand. The book of revelation is broken down into three parts or sections and we have already been through the first one.
