Intro
Jam 3:5-8
The tongue may be small but what power it has: over death and life
DISCUSSION
The Power of the Tongue Pro 18:21
“Hand” (yad)-control, power of the tongue
What we say can bring much good to others and ourselves
What we say can crush others
John Brackett’s dog “Stupid”—the dog never got done on himself for being called stupid all the time
Not that way with us
Eph 4:29 s
Our tongues can produce death
David had protected Nabal’s men while he was having his sheep sheared in Carmel (1 Sam 25:5-8)
Nabal was a foolish man and evil (1 Sam 25:3)
Note how Nabal reacts to the request for provision in return for protection (1 Sam 25:10-12)
His hateful, foolish response has warranted him a death sentence—death is in the power of the tongue (1 Sam 25:13, 20-22)
Our tongues can produce life
Abigail informed of Nabal’s foolish response (1 Sam 25:14-17)
She gathers provisions (1 Sam 25:18-19)
She graciously pleads for her husbands life (1 Sam 25:23-31)
David’s response (1 Sam 25:32-35)
Her kind and humble words spared David from committing murder—life is in the power of the tongue
Nabal would end up drinking himself to death; Abigail would marry David (1 Sam 25:36-40)
Exhortation
Do our words produce life or death? Is a simple request from a family member met with grumbling? anger? or kindness and respect?
All of us at times struggle to control our tongues
