Behavioral Conformity

Mark 2:27 NLT
Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.

Nobody has children so there will be someone to play with the toys.

God did not create us so there would be someone to keep His rules.

God loves you more than God loves his commandments.

When religious leaders used the law of God to manipulate people made in the image of God...

Jesus was quick to remind them that they were on the wrong side of God.

The Story of Jesus of Nazareth, Peter’s eye witness account, John Mark

Gospel of Mark

Mark 1:15 NLT
“The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
Mark 2:15 NLT
Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.)
Mark 2:16 TPT
But when the religious scholars and the Pharisees found out that Jesus was keeping company and dining with sinners and tax collectors, they were indignant. So they approached Jesus’ disciples and said to them, “Why is it that someone like Jesus defiles himself by eating with sinners and tax collectors?”
Mark 2:17 NLT
When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

Levi had no idea what hung in the balance of that one decision to follow Jesus.

Do you know what hangs in the balance of your decision to admit you need help?

Mark 2:17 NLT
When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

In ancient times the gods were like apps

There is a god for that

Mark 2:21 NLT
“Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before.
Mark 2:22 NLT
“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.”

torn cloth, burst wineskins

Incompatible

Mark 3:1 NLT
Jesus went into the synagogue again and noticed a man with a deformed hand.
Mark 3:2 NLT
Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus’ enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.
Mark 3:3 NLT
Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand, “Come and stand in front of everyone.”
Mark 3:4 NLT
Then he turned to his critics and asked, “Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?” But they wouldn’t answer him.

Is the law of God for the benefit of God?

Or is it for the benefit of those God loves?

Mark 3:5 NLT
He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!
Mark 3:6 NLT
At once the Pharisees went away and met with the supporters of Herod to plot how to kill Jesus.

There was no way to blend the kingdom they were trying to preserve with the kingdom Jesus had come to establish.

Mark 2:27 NLT
Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
Mark 3:21 NLT
When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they said.

If you are a sinner, you are invited to follow Jesus.

If you are a follower, you are invited to yield to Jesus.

Matthew 11:29 NLT
Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Mark 1:15 NLT
“The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
