1. Jesus the Servant

Study

A. Why do you think that Jesus was rejected by His own people? (John 1:11) How do you reconcile this thought with the fact that crowds followed Him and “hung on His every word”? (Luke 19:48) Do you recall a period in your life when you consciously rejected Jesus? What was the event or circumstances that caused you to turn your life over to Jesus?

B. What was it that made Jesus so pleasing to the Father? (John 4:34; Hebrews 10:7) When did God first make it clear that He was pleased with Jesus? (Matthew 3:17) What was it that caused the Father to be pleased with Jesus? (Matthew 12:18)

2. Jesus the Sufferer

A. Do you believe that mental pain can be as bad as physical pain? Why or why not? How do we know that Jesus really endured mental pain? (Luke 22:44) Do you think the mental agony of Jesus might have offset some of the physical pain that He would endure? Why do you think He had to suffer emotionally? (Hebrews 4:15)

B. What has been your most painful punishment? Did you deserve it? Why do you think Jesus had to go through so much suffering instead of just being put to death? (1 Peter 3:18) Does knowing how terribly Jesus suffered for us help you to endure when you are treated unfairly? (Hebrews 12:3) What should be our response to the sufferings that Jesus endured in our behalf? (Acts 8:36)

3. Jesus the Substitute

A. Has anyone (other than Jesus!) ever intervened in your life to save you from a punishment? (John 15:13) Have you ever tried to intervene for someone else to save them from punishment? Do you see how this could relate to the abortion issue? Was Jesus being treated cruelly by God? Why or why not?

B. Do you think we are supposed to continue to grow in our understanding and appreciation of our salvation? (1 Peter 2:2) Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you think about what Jesus did for you? (Colossians 2:7) How do you express your gratitude for your salvation? (Colossians 3:16)

4. Jesus the Sovereign

A. What does the term “sovereign” mean? Does Jesus have to be sovereign in your life to be saved? How about in order to grow in the faith? What did the early church expect from the Sovereignty of God in Acts 4:24-31? Do you see the Trinity of God in these verses?

B. How would you tie in the previous verses with the idea of God being sovereign as it was revealed in the Isaiah passage? What do you think the “spoils of the victor” would be in Isaiah 53:12?
