Hebrews 11:7 NLT
It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.
INTRODUCTION:
A- Our desire for a firm handle.
Story of the man who fell over a cliff.
B- Our need for an example.
1- God has provided the needed examples. (1 Corinthians 10:11)
1 Corinthians 10:11 NLT
These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.
a. Noah is one of those whose life is to be taken as an example for us.
(1) An example of faith.
(2) An example of a man who lived courageously guided by godly convictions in a world that tested him to extremes.
TS: What does a life governed by godly convictions look like?

I- THE TESTIMONY OF A LIFE LIVED BY GODLY CONVICTIONS. (Hebrews 11:7a)

Hebrews 11:7a (NLT)
7 It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.

A- The great difference : (Genesis 6:6-9)

Genesis 6:6–9 NLT
6 So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. 7 And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” 8 But Noah found favor with the Lord. 9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
1- A world filled with sin.
a. Noah’s world was a world that was consumed by sin.
(Genesis 6:5)
Genesis 6:5 NLT
5 The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.
b. Our contemporary world is much like Noah’s world.
2- The difference God desires:
a. He desires for His people to live separated lives.
(2 Corinthians 6:17)
2 Corinthians 6:17 NLT
17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you.
Like those of the believers in Antioch.
(Acts 11:26)
Acts 11:26 NLT
26 When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people. (It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.)
(1) Noah’s life was different than the rest of the world.
faith
obedience

B- The grace received:

(Genesis 6:8)
Genesis 6:8 NLT
8 But Noah found favor with the Lord.
1- Grace is always the basis of the believer’s relationship with God.
(Ephesians 2:8-10)
Ephesians 2:8–10 NLT
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

C- The generations of fellowship:

(Genesis 6:9)
Genesis 6:9 NLT
9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
1- A strong testimony is developed over time.
a. Through family relationships.
(Genesis 6:10)
Genesis 6:10 NLT
10 Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
2- A strong testimony has certain characteristics.
(Genesis 6:9)
Genesis 6:9 (NLT)
9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
a. righteous
b. blameless
c. Walked in close fellowship with God
3- What is your testimony?
Mahatma Gandhi - “I would have become a Christian, had it not been for Christians.”

II- THE TESTING OF A LIFE LIVED BY GODLY CONVICTIONS (Hebrews 11:7b)

Hebrews 11:7b (NLT)
It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.
(Genesis 7:1-7)
Genesis 7:1–7 NLT
1 When everything was ready, the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. 2 Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice, and take one pair of each of the others. 3 Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood. 4 Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created.” 5 So Noah did everything as the Lord commanded him. 6 Noah was 600 years old when the flood covered the earth. 7 He went on board the boat to escape the flood—he and his wife and his sons and their wives.

A- Definite disaster. (Genesis 7:4)

Genesis 7:4 NLT
4 Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created.”
1- Real convictions are tested in extreme circumstances.
a. The pronouncement of coming judgment.
(2 Peter 3:10-12)
2 Peter 3:10–12 NLT
10 But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. 11 Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, 12 looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames.
b. The persecution that comes our way.
(Revelation 2:8-11)
Revelation 2:8–11 NLT
8 “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Smyrna. This is the message from the one who is the First and the Last, who was dead but is now alive: 9 “I know about your suffering and your poverty—but you are rich! I know the blasphemy of those opposing you. They say they are Jews, but they are not, because their synagogue belongs to Satan. 10 Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life. 11 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death.
c. The problems we face each day.

B- Disciplined obedience. (Genesis 7:5)

Genesis 7:5 NLT
5 So Noah did everything as the Lord commanded him.
1- The need is for complete obedience.
(1 Peter 1:6-7)
1 Peter 1:6–7 NLT
6 So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
a. What would have happened if Noah had not been completely obedient?

C- Determined Leadership. (Genesis 7:6-7)

Genesis 7:6–7 NLT
6 Noah was 600 years old when the flood covered the earth. 7 He went on board the boat to escape the flood—he and his wife and his sons and their wives.
1- There is a great need for those who will be determined, godly leaders.
a. Godly leadership in the family.
b. Godly leadership in the church.
c. Godly leadership in the world.

III- THE THANKFULNESS OF A LIFE OF GODLY CONVICTION. (Genesis 8:20-22)

Genesis 8:20–22 NLT
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for that purpose. 21 And the Lord was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things. 22 As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.”

A- Thankfulness expressed.

1- True gratitude will produce action and sacrifice. (Genesis 8:20)
Genesis 8:20 NLT
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for that purpose.
(Romans 12:1-2)
Romans 12:1–2 NLT
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
People make promises and vows they do not keep.
Man on ocean - vowed to give all, ½, ¼, none.

B- Thankfulness received:

(Genesis 8:21)
Genesis 8:21 NLT
21 And the Lord was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things.
1- God’s promises are always good.
(1 Thessalonians 5:24)
1 Thessalonians 5:24 NLT
24 God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.
God’s promises to Abraham all fulfilled.

C- Thankfulness rewarded: (Genesis 8:22)

22 As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.”
1- God’s promises are always sure.
(Philippians 4:19)
Philippians 4:19 NLT
19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
CONCLUSION:
