I. GUARDING THE FLOCK
2 Timothy 3:1–5 (ESV) — 1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.
Avoid such people.
1 Corinthians 5:9–13 (ESV) — 9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.
11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.
12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders?
Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside.
“Purge the evil person from among you.”
2 Timothy 3:6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.
8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.
9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
2 Timothy 3:5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.
Avoid such people.
This describes those who externally have all of the accouterments of authentic religion and piety yet on the inside differ not at all from unbelievers.
They are enslaved to their sin.
They take the name of Christianity on their lips, but they do not have the power of Christ in their hearts.
Paul commands Timothy to “avoid such people” (cf. 1 Cor.
5:11).[1]
1 Timothy 6:3–6 (ESV) — 3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing.
He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain…
2 Timothy 4:3 (ESV) — 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
Unholy attitudes lead unholy people to teach unholy things to unholy people.
2 Timothy 3:7 (ESV) — 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.
