In accordance with the tradition established and observed by this chapel’s congregation, today we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Communion is for anyone who has placed their faith in or trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for his salvation; it is a time we look inwardly, examining ourselves before the Lord.
We remember the words of Jesus after he had fed the 5,000, from the account of the Apostle John[6:56] “whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him. [57] Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me. [58] This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will have eternal life.”
At this time, as our ushers distribute the elements, I ask that everyone wait for all to be served, that we would be able to celebrate together in a manner similar to and in remembrance of the Lord’s final night with His disciples through which we are reminded of the new covenant. We are instructed to [1 Corinthians 11:25b] “Do this often in remembrance of Me.” Jesus said to them, [26] “for as often as [we] eat this bread and drink this cup, [we] proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” [27] “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. [29] For anyone who eats and drinks without repentance eats and drinks judgment on himself.”
Would you take a moment in silent reflection and confession.
Gracious and loving God, you invite us to your table, yet we resist your grace in both action and deed through what we have done and what we have left undone. You have, once and for all, announced your pardon; let us accept and proclaim your forgiveness to the world as you have instructed your faithful to do, amen.
In the words of Paul the Apostle, [1 Cor 11:23] For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, [24] and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: do this in remembrance of me. [25] In the same way, after supper, He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood [poured out for the forgiveness of sin]; take and drink.” [26] For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
[Ephesians 2:8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Peace be with you.
