2) The 3 C’s:

a)     Character- Character is the moral fiber that a man or a woman is known. As a staff person, character is manifested in the home, the community, and the church.

1 Timothy 3:2-7 (NIV) Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.

·         Character in speech

·         Character in finances

·         Character in ministry

·         Character in time management

b)     Competency- Competency has to do with our ability or gifting. We might have zeal, a great heart, and are well liked by all but we don’t have the ability to do the ministry assigned to us.

Matthew 25:14-23 (NIV)
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. 19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ 22 “The man with the two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.’ 23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

c)      Chemistry-

Amos 3:3 Shall two walk together except they be agreed?

Acts 15:39-40 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.

Proverbs 27:6  Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Chemistry has to do with our ability to work with one another. The reality of ministry is that we are operating in the context of family most of the time. We might have incredible gifting and character but the chemistry just isn’t there. We are striving for a synergistic effect in our staff (the sum is greater than the whole or in other words 1+1=3). Another dimension of chemistry is “do we like each other” or to we tolerate one another? Are we being honest with another or do we withhold our true heart?
