To see how God has fulfilled his old testament promises
The Gospel of Matthew (euangelion)
Save people of their since, coming as king,
Matthew was a tax collector. Not a good dude. Same as Zacheus from Luke 19:1-5
He entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
One purpose of the book of Matthew: — The purpose of Jesus’ mission is found in Matthew 1:21
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
“Save his people from their sins”
He performed the miracles to show people that he had the power to forgive people from their sins
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Theme ( Jesus the Christ, son of God)
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Jesus in Hebrew - Jeshua - Joshua
The Christ - Anointed one - the one,
Jesus didn’t come to take care of Politics and things here on earth but instead, Jesus came to wage ware against sin / Satan. He was not motivated by national recognition or other but to elevate the kingdom or God,
Greek word for genealogy = Genesis
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
This is a culminating point for Peter to realize who Jesus really is.
On this rock (the truth that I am the Christ the son of the living God)
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
Beginning, MIddle, End - Jesus was the Christ
Point 1: Identify that Jesus is the promised solution
Point 1: Identify that Jesus is the promised solution
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Now the presence of God is out among the people
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
I have all the authority in heave and under the earth — therefore he is king
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Point 2: Know how to have a relationship with God.
Point 2: Know how to have a relationship with God.
Theme is “The Kingdom of God”
Kingdom of God = God’s reign over creation
The kingdom of heaven is at hand
Matthew is the only writer that uses the Kingdom of God and Kingdom of Heaven. They are the same thing
Kingdom of God = Already and not yet
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Jesus came here to call people to Repentance.
Chapter 13 focuses on the kingdom of God, kingdom of Heaven
Gospel in the Greek is transliterated evangelism
But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?
The gospel will be proclaimed as a testimony to who Jesus was
Has the testimony of Christ gone out to all nations. Then the end will come
Point 3: The Gospel of Matthew will help you deal with the here and now while focusing on the Kingdom of God.
The kingdom of God is both the means and the end

2. Read Matthew 2:22-23, “But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.” (Isaiah 11:1)
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
Matthew 5:17-20 . Matthew uses Old Testament (OT) references over 55 times and points to Jesus fulfilling OT scripture 12 times in his gospel account. How does Jesus’ fulfillment of so many Old Testament prophecies concerning the coming Messiah undergird your faith with confidence?
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

3. Read Matthew 1:18–23 ,
Matthew 9:1-8
And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
Matthew 26:26–29 . What do these scriptures explain as the purpose of Jesus’ earthly ministry? As we study the Gospel of Matthew, why is keeping this central theme of “forgiveness of sins” pivotal to understanding all of Jesus’ parables and narratives?
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
4. Read Matthew 6:33–34 . These verses show how much Jesus taught us to deal with our lives here by singularly focusing on the Kingdom of God. Why do you think Jesus spent so much time telling people to focus on the Kingdom? What can you do this week to ensure that your heart, mind, and hands are staying focused on the Kingdom of God and not the Kingdom of Earth
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
1. Write down one observation you found particularly helpful from this week’s sermon.
2. Read Matthew 2:22-23

For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.
