Smart men walked on the moon, daring men walked on the ocean floor, but wise men walk with God.
Favorite Bible Characters:
No one said Enoch— they never do. Maybe it is because are less than 20 verses in the whole Bible that speak of him directly. Maybe it is because his translation into Heaven is something that none of us can empathize with— making him unattainable.
But could there be a simpler reason? Could it be that Enoch is so-seldom seen in the pages of the Word of God because he did a fairly common thing. He didn’t slay a giant. He didn’t raise the dead. He didn’t destroy a city. He didn’t rip an animal apart with his bare hands. He just walked with God. Can you imagine--- the chief feature of Enoch’s life was the day he started walking with God?
Genesis 5:22-25: “And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech:”
Hebrews 11:5-6: “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Jude 14-15: “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
What is Enoch’s story?

Luke 3:23, “And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,” 34-38: “Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala, Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech, Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.”
Adam- man
Seth- appointed
Enos- mortal
Cainan- sorrow

CONTRASTING TWO FAMILIES
CAIN’S ENOCH- built a city in order to establish a legacy; Seth’s ENOCH walked with God and was taken to God’s city
Cain’s LAMECH- was a murderer and took innocent life; Seth’s LAMECH reared Noah and saved life
Cain’s family- no information as to the number of years that they lived and no information as to how they died; Seth’s family has biographical data, such as the number of years they lived, the year at which they bore a son, and the number of years they lived after having a child
Cain’s family left a mark on earth; Seth’s family made a mark on eternity
THE FIRST TWO PEOPLE TO DIE WENT TO HEAVEN (ADAM AND ABEL)
THE THIRD TO DIE LEFT THE SCENE— WAS TRANSLATED
Someone noted of this: “God began to populate Heaven before Satan began to populate Hell!”
TWO CONTRASTS:
4:25-26- men began to call upon the name of the LORD
6:1-9: Noah’s was perfect in his generations
MAY I ASK A QUESTION THIS MORNING: to what family do you belong? into which do you endeavor to be identified?
It has been noted that “without God, the more power we have the sooner we destroy ourselves; without God, the richer we are, the sooner we rot.”

A Tale of 2 Halves

It appears that the Bible is teaches us here that for the first 65 years of Enoch’s life, he was from a godly family but wasn’t living like it. It is as if he knew what was important— but something woke him up— something stirred inside of him to stop living for this sinful world. God provided a season of perspective and repentance to Enoch. ..and he started walking...
The word “walk” here means “to go with; to go alongside.” Enoch went along with God...
Genesis 3:8: “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.”
In Super Bowl 51, Matt Ryan’s Atlanta Falcons led the Tom Brady New England Patriots 21-3 at the half. Brady and the Patriots were icy cold, while the Falcons were executing flawlessly. To make matters worse for the Patriots, Atlanta scored a fourth TD halfway through the 3rd Q to extend their lead to 28-3. Victory was almost a foregone conclusions--- except it wasn’t. The final score was 34-28—
What happened to the red-hot Falcons? Coach Dan Quinn surmised: ““I think for sure we ran out of gas some,” Quinn said, per Reuters.com. “They executed terrifically. That was one of the things that we don’t talk about with them a lot, is the way they can execute.
“When they got hot, it was hard for us to deal with.”
It makes sense that the Falcons got tired. They ran just 46 offensive plays during the Super Bowl while the Patriots ran a whopping 93. New England had the fresher defense, and the Falcons' offense just couldn't stay on the field in the second half.
We know virtually NOTHING about Enoch’s first 65 years of life. And frankly, we don’t know a whole lot more about the last 300 years of his life either. All we know is that when Methuselah was born, he started walking with God. There has to be something about the birth of that little boy that stirred something up in the heart of a proud new papa.
To use another football term, Enoch had reached halftime in his life.
Bob Buford: “There is the reality of the game itself: the clock is running. What once looked like an eternity ahead of you is now within reach. And while you do not fear the end of the game, you do want to make sure that you finish well, that you leave something behind that no one can take away from you. If the first half was a quest for success, the second half is a journey to significance.
Psalm 92:12-14: “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord Shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; They shall be fat and flourishing;”
ENOCH- shortest life in Genesis 5; fathered the longest life in Genesis 5, but it’s not about the number of days you live that matters. Rather, it is what you do with your time that makes a difference.
DAVID BRAINERD:
29 years, 5 months, 19 days-
his gravestone features this pithy epitaph, "A faithful and laborious missionary to the Stockbridge, Delaware and Susquehanna tribes of Indians."
“Saw so much of the wickedness of my heart that I longed to get away from myself…I felt almost pressed to death with my own vileness. Oh what a body of death is there in me…Oh the closest walk with God is the sweetest heaven that can be enjoyed on earth!” ― David Brainerd, The Life and Diary of David Brainerd
