Intro:

Social media/texting/quick contact is probably one of the most remarkable achievements in human history
Like anything in the world, social media can be used for immense good.
However, it can also be used for immense evil.
Tonight, i’m not just talking about social media, but all forms of media.
Video games, music, texting, video chat, social media
There has been a gigantic increase in anxiety and depression starting at 2011 going until now.
From 2009-2015 statistics revealed that girls 15-19 who were admitted to hospital for non-fatal self harm rose 62*
10-14 rose 189%
Suicide rates 15-19 rose 70%
10-14 rose 151%
How is your generation spending its time?
Come home from school
Get on devices
A whole generation is more anxious, depressed, less risks,
Mankind was not made to be isolated
You may think that media brings people together, when in reality it drives us further apart.
3 out of 4 people would rather have a text conversation than a conversation in person (PEW research facility)
Texts can be misunderstood and misinterpreted.
People in general prefer a text/call/email over in person conversation.
Do you think that is a positive or negative thing?
Our relationships cannot be solely online
Relationships are a skill that needs to be developed
Reading non verbal cues, tone of voice, time and place to ask/answer question
These skills can’t be developed online.
We have inoculated ourselves to reality by taking this
I know statistics are the most fascinating thing, but it can
Media can be a beneficial thing if used in moderation.
Tongiht, we’re looking at 7 principles for our media and a commitment we can live by because of it.

1. My media will never replace my relationship with God.

Matthew 6:33 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Media gets in the way of what is important sometimes.
Not just relationships with man, but also our relationship with God.
Don’t allow your media to keep you from your most important relationship.

2. My media will glorify God and others, NOT myself

Matthew 22:36–40 ESV
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Media can take us to distant lands.
media can help us to numb our brains.
is it possible media takes away our ability to see the needs of others?
Media takes away our ability to love God and others

3. I will control my words in my media

Proverbs 18:21 ESV
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
Galatians 1:10 ESV
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Jeremiah 9:23–24 ESV
23 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
My words will be honest
My words will be Christ focused, not self-focused
My words will be kind

4. A God-honoring heart will control my media, my media will not control my heart.

Proverbs 4:23 ESV
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Garbage in-garbage out
THe only way to control this is by being proactive with the throne of your heart.
Who or what are you allowing on the throne of your heart?

5. I will display a God-honoring testimony through my media.

Philippians 1:27 ESV
27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,
What does it mean to be worthy of the gospel?
Can we even be worthy of the gospel?
If we are being controlled by our media we are not worthy of the gospel. We are totally unworthy

6. My media will not be the main priority of my life.

Colossians 3:23 ESV
23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,
As humans we are called to do certain things
Whether school, work, ministry.
Chores
Etc.
Media cannot get in the way and distract you from what you should be doing .

7. My media will not be dependent on man’s praise.

Galatians 1:10 ESV
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Proverbs 29:25 ESV
25 The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
Do you ever wonder about who is following you
If that person liked your post?
If other’s thought your new haircut was...”cute”
Life isn’t meant to be lived for man’s praise. Is that where you are allowing yourself to live?
