Intro

where have we been
do you ever read the Bible and think well I’m not sure how that applies to me
or I’ll think about that when I’m older
thats adult stuff
well that’s what the passage is this week
but don’t tune out engage with this and ask what should I do with this
it’s a good practice
Read Mark 10:1-12
Mark 10:1–12 ESV
1 And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them. 2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” 5 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ 7 ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” 10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

The Teacher

Mark 10:1 ESV
1 And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.
Jesus is about his father bussiness
He is always a teacher preacher
In all instances he is ready to teach
As we will see his crowd isnt always receptive
We meet a Jesus who understands his time is short
He teaches more directly and with more urgency now as this road turns toward his death
He will teach more about what it means to follow a suffering savior
What it will look like to follow him with marriage
with Children
With our possessions
His teaching here is more pointed
More emphatic
More contradictory to the pharisees
More inflamatory
Jesus will not mince words
He knows the end is near and he teaches like it is

The conflict

Mark 10:2–4 ESV
2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.”
A theme we will see is the pharisees testing him
Remember who this man is Jesus the Christ
If he is in fact the Christ then all he has taught is true and the Pharisees are out of a job
Their place in society is lost
this man has come and done everything he shouldn't according to their laws and they need to pprove him to be a fraud and kill him off
There is a thought that this question comes because it is the vary thing that John the Baptist beheaded
They are trying to set him up
If Jesus comes out against divorce then he must be against the kings marriage
and then deserving of the kings punishment just as John was
Or maybe they want to show him to be in conflict with Torah
They want him to refute the mosaic law found in Deuteronomy 24:1-4
Deuteronomy 24:1–4 ESV
1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, 2 and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, 4 then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
They want to trap him into saying something to get him killed or discredited
This will be something we will see for the remainder of Mark this conflict with the pharisees
So they come to him to trap him and they ask him this question
This question is at the center of much debate in the jewish society
Just as it is here
Coming from a family with divorce in it
I can tell you its a terrible thing
Clearly something that is broken
It’s not the way things should be
This question of the okayness of divorce
is intended to cause Jesus to loose his credibility
It will however backfire
Because we must remeber who this man is he is the Christ
The one who teaches with authority
The one who seems to have more knowledge of the scripture than the scribes
the one who we believe is one with God
He is the Word
He declares scriture
No truth is so that he hasnt declared true
This conflict will end poorly for those who seek to trap him because as we will see their hearts are hardened toward the LORD
They have limited understanding

The Schooling

Mark 10:5–10 ESV
5 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.
The rebuke is strong and ringing
Because of your hardness of heart
Because you dont truly understand
Because you dont want to understand
Because brokenness exists in this world you were given this
Deuteronomy 24:1–4 ESV
This is not a passage that encourages divorce
It’s not supposed to be a passage used to simplify the process
What Jesus is pointing out is since this was happening a structure was given hopefully to limit the practice
Men came in and perverted it to seem as some type of acceptance of the practice of divorce
Dont mistake God’s Grace for his acceptance or approval
Jesus wants to clarify this so as opposed to taking a passage about how to escape a marriage he directs them back to the original intention for marriage
Genesis 1:27 ESV
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Genesis 2:24 ESV
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
He says lets return to God’s original intention for marriage
The way marriage was before the fall
Look you have a heart problem here
You are looking for ways out
Instead look for ways of obedience
We want to defile what God has created
Jesus drives this home
Mark 10:9 ESV
9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Look this is the way its supposed to be dont defile that
If you are to follow me this is what is asked of you
My Dad has had every reason to divorce my step mom
Yet he doesnt
He sacrificially loves her
Why??? I dont know
He is obedient to the Lord
What God has joined together
What God has instituted dont defile
The pharisees did this approved of it and Jesus knows this
They like the rules for an easy escape
We all like those
But we must go back and understand the way God has designed it
And instead of builing our thoughts off of the destruction manual
Build them off of the instruction manual
Commentary says soemthing like why would you try to learn about battle from only learning to retreat
Their hardness of heart keeps them from seeing the error of their ways
what do we do with this?
Well first don’t get divorced easier said now but commit in your heart
decide can I follow this savior
can I sacrifice
accept the lesson in the schooling
where has my hard heart caused me to justify the out as opposed to pressing in and sacrificing
jesus will lay down everything for us and he calls us to come and follow
lay down everything and follow me be obedient to me
mark will continue to lay out what it will look like to follow Jesus listen take head and ask not who is this man but can I follow him
