“Preach the Word”
Introduction: We have all heard Raoul say, “Preach the Word.” But what does that mean exactly?
In 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Timothy we have Paul giving Timothy several charges. But the last chapter of last letter is the grand finally in 2 Tim 4:2 to preach the Word.
Poor Timothy is fixing to face some hard times ahead and Paul will not be around much longer. Paul wants to encourage young Timothy to remain strong in the faith as many false teachers will rise up.
Think about how many churches there are today teaching other things. It is why we need to preach The Word, the truth, and the full truth.
Look at how many versions of Scripture there are: beloved King James, ASV, Not ASV, Not KJV, ESV, NIS, and it starts going down hill very quickly as the translation get away from the WORD.
In 2 Tim 4:1-8 we will see three things. First, we will see the Charge (2 TIM. 4:1-4). Second, we will see the Command (2 Tim. 4:5). Finally, we will see the Consecration (2 Tim. 4:6-8).
Thesis: We have been commanded to go into all the world and teach the Gospel to all creation; our time is limited, and we need to redeem the time in Preaching Gods Word to save and edify as many souls as we can before our departure from this life.
I. The Charge (2 TIM. 4:1-4).
a. Preach the Word
b. Several of you will be Gospel preachers. You are going to do a lot of different works after school. You will be writing bullitins, be counsilors, conduct Bible studies, office manager, the one who expected to mow the lawn, go visit people, take out the trash.
BUT THE ONE THING WE MUST NOT LOSE SIGHT OF IS PREACHING THE WORD!!
i. In Season
ii. Out of season
iii. Brother Roper says it like this: We have Deer season and not Deer Season; or open Season and closed Season BUT there is no closed season for preaching the Gospel.
There will be a time where people want the message your preaching, there will also be a time when people don’t want the message you’re preaching. But Preach the Word, the full council of God.
c. Reprove, Rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
i. There will be those who need to be built up in the faith; there will be those who are weak and need the truth proclaimed; their will be those who need to be encouraged to remain strong in the faith.
d. There will be a time where people will turn from sound doctrine.
i. We see it all over Austin.
1. Pride
2. Abortion
e. People will turn from the truth.
II. The Command (2 Tim. 4:5).
a. Be careful and Keep watch in everything you do.
b. You are going to endure affliction.
c. Continue to do the work of an evangelist.
d. Make full proof of thy ministry.
e. Paul telling Timothy he wont be around much longer and he needs to remain strong in the faith. He will face a lot of affliction with false doctrine being proclaimed everywhere.
f. Thanks be to God we are not facing near what young Timothy probably had to deal with.
III. The Consecration (2 Tim. 4:6-8).
a. Paul is ready to die and be offered up.
b. Paul has fought the good fight. His whole ministry summed up.
c. Paul has finished the course.
d. Paul has kept the faith.
e. Paul has a reward waiting for him.
f. Not only to him but to all those who love His appearing.
g. The letter opened with:
i. 2 Tim. 1:7-8 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God.”
ii. 2 Tim. 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
h. Don’t be like Demas or Alexander the coppersmith who loved the world!!
i. Vs 8 Lets us know this is not just for Timothy or preachers BUT for everyone.
i. All those who love His appearing.
ii. All those who have not been living the Christian livestyle are not going to like it when they are kneeling before the Judge hearing depart from me for you never knew me!!!!!
iii. But the faithfull will love His appearing because now they are going to get there great reward..
iv. They will receive their crown, their mansion prepared, their inheritance they have been waiting for.
Conclusion: We must preach the Word, Preach the full council of God, do the work of a evangelist.
One day we should all be able to say we to are ready to be offered up, because we to had fought the good fight, and finished the course by keeping the faith so we can also receive the crown of righteousness.
So, we can hear well done thou good and faithful servant.
First, we saw the Charge (2 TIM. 4:1-4). Second, we saw the Command (2 Tim. 4:5). Finally, we saw the Consecration (2 Tim. 4:6-8). So, continue to Preach the Word.
