Nehemiah 1:1–4 KJV 1900
1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace, 2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire. 4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
He was heart broken. His homeland was destroyed.
Why was this such a big deal?
What did his homeland represent?
Who gave their homeland to them?
He prayed a prayer of repentance
Notice who he prayed for.
He prayed for the children of Israel and asked forgiveness for their sins as well as his.
And he also prayed for him self he says WE HAVE SINNED. I and my fathers
He reminded God of his promises VERSE 8
His prayer brought a huge miracle.
He had the faith to have a big ask.
But it also brought opposition
Nehemiah 2:10 KJV 1900
10 When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
We must look past the flesh and blood and perceive the spiritual warfare happening.
We are called to do great things for God, but the devil is going to fight us the entire time
Now notice the gist of the book
Chapter 3 the wall is rebuilt
Chapter 4 there is opposition to the wall
Chapter 5 there was in fighting
Chapter 6 more opposition of the wall
Chapter 6 also has the completion of the wall
But now notice why was the wall completed?
What do you think one of the first things the people did once they had the wall built was?
Nehemiah 8:1–6 KJV 1900
1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel. 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. 4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: 6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
