Knowing the physical, emotional, and spiritual torture he was about to bear, Jesus began to be sorrowful and troubled. Matthew used these words to communicate the extreme emotional distress Jesus experienced.
Jesus’ own words further explained his emotional state: My soul is over-whelmed with sorrow to the point of death (cf. Ps. 42:5–6, 11; 43:5). Jesus was on the verge of dying from a broken heart, so extreme was his emotional distress.
All the woe of the world falls upon Him, and oppresses His heart.
Even unto death.—The extremest degree. Even unto death, so that sorrow might bring Me to death, Jon. 4:9. “Anguish even unto death, the woes of one struggling with death, I now experience. The words of Ps. 22:16; 40:13;
When the sorrow is even to death, the meaning is that it is so great it could even bring on the death of the person.
