The practice of communicating with a deity…
A Lesson from the Garden!
Matthew 26:36–37 ESV
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
“Sit here, while I go over there and pray”
#1 Lesson - We all need a place…
Jesus takes with him Peter, James and John…
Sorrowful: extremely sad adj. — crushed by grief; understood as if surrounded by sadness.
Troubled: to be despondent (hopeless) v. — to be or become without or almost without hope.
Matthew F. The King Finds Comfort with His Father (26:36–46)

Knowing the physical, emotional, and spiritual torture he was about to bear, Jesus began to be sorrowful and troubled. Matthew used these words to communicate the extreme emotional distress Jesus experienced.

Jesus’ own words further explained his emotional state: My soul is over-whelmed with sorrow to the point of death (cf. Ps. 42:5–6, 11; 43:5). Jesus was on the verge of dying from a broken heart, so extreme was his emotional distress.

Matthew 26:38 ESV
Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”

All the woe of the world falls upon Him, and oppresses His heart.

Even unto death.—The extremest degree. Even unto death, so that sorrow might bring Me to death, Jon. 4:9. “Anguish even unto death, the woes of one struggling with death, I now experience. The words of Ps. 22:16; 40:13;

When the sorrow is even to death, the meaning is that it is so great it could even bring on the death of the person.

“He said to them”’
