Letter to The Romans

written in 57 AD when Paul was residing in Corinth
this letter was to prepare the Christians in Rome for a proposed visit
letter sets out Paul’s ministry based on the gospel
it is the gospel of justification by faith
it clearly distinguishes between Spirit and flesh
Romans 1:2–6 NIV
the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake. And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

Source of the Gospel

Romans 1:2 NIV
the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
gospel = justification by faith
God instigated a plan when Adam and Eve sinned
it is in the scriptures
Galatians 3:8 NIV
Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”
the prophets kept reminding all of this promise
Acts 10:43 NIV
All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

The Promised Saviour

Romans 1:3 NIV
regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David,
the lineage of Jesus stretches back through David to Abraham
Matthew 1:1 NIV
This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:
here is a man, a man of flesh and of the earth
yet his heritage is mighty - King David and the father of faith
the bible is not our key to salvation
it is always has been about Jesus Christ this gospel message

The Nature of Jesus

Romans 1:4 NIV
and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus was born of the flesh yet was conceived by the Spirit of holiness
there was a more important outworking of the holy Spirit
Ephesians 1:20 NIV
he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,
seated at the right hand is seated in the position of all authority and power
Jesus is the only true Saviour
no other man of flesh have ever been raised from the dead
he conquered death
now comes our commitment to the truth
Romans 10:9 NIV
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
1 Corinthians 15:15 NIV
More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised.
we must witness to the fact that Jesus was raised from the dead
and that he now gives us eternal life
we are saved from sin , the penalty being death

Our Status in Christ

Romans 1:5 NIV
Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.
Paul talks of receiving grace
on the road to Damascus
1 Timothy 1:13–14 NIV
Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Paul was called for his purpose even though he was the worst sinner
there is hope for you when you call upon the lord

The Seal of the Promise

Romans 1:6 NIV
And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
you are called to belong to Jesus Christ
his sacrifice on the cross has divine and eternal ramifications
it is not a man dying
it is the Son of God taking back life for all mankind
all authority and purpose in Jesus has been restored and returned to all believers
this is what we share in
this is the whole intent of Romans: its theme
declaring boldly the promised gospel of Jesus Christ
life changing and life empowering
