The bible talks about remembering or remembrance in 2 ways.

1.God

God always remembers and keeps his covenant/ the promises he has made.

2. People

How easy we forget!
Forgetting to tell Samuel something important because there are so many other things going on.
“Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it.” - Famous Quote
- Forgetting history causes you to repeat it. We are supposed to learn from our mistakes from our history.
Judges 8:33-34 “33 So it was, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god. 34 Thus the children of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side,”
Exp- Talking to Germans. Not proud of their past. Take 1 year of holocaust history in school. So they wont repeat it.
The Israelites walked around the same dessert and became captives time and time again. Why? They forgot.
-They forgot God was leading them through the desert.
-They did not ask they complained
When we forget our God we are lead into sin.
When we forget our sin it leads us into more.
-Pride. Goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall Proverbs 16:18
Exodus 1:8- Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph
-Everything was great in Egypt after Joseph took over as 2nd in command, people respected the Israelite, who were brought there by Joseph. But then a king arose that did not know him. A place of blessing and answered prayers turned to a place of curses. History was forgotten and it led to sin.

How do we forget God?

1. We forget His commandments.

a.Just because you have Grace doesn’t mean you are exempt from the law. Jesus didn’t abolish the law he fulfilled it.

-Jesus came to fulfill the ceremonial law. We are still to follow the moral law.

b. Jesus himself gave us commandments, here are a few

-Love one another as He loves us (John 13:34-35)
-Go Make Disciples (Matthew 28:18-20)
-Pray always (Luke 21:36)

c. “O Lord, I remember Your name in the night, And keep Your law” Psalm 119:55

-This writer understood the importance of keeping the law.
If a child disobeys and says he loves you it would be easy to disbelieve than an obedient child.
To love is to obey

2. Forgetfulness leads to pride

A. When we forget where we have come from we forget our need of a savior.

- Deuteronomy 8:11-18 Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, 12 lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; 14 when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; 15 who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water; who brought water for you out of the flinty rock; 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—17 then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’
18 “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day

B. The Israelites forgot where they were brought from, and who brought them out of it. V 14-16

We forget when things are going well. v 17

People believe bad times leads to distance from God, but I believe the opposite is greater.
When things are going well, we can forget the past and believe we have gotten where we are by ourselves.
We can look down on sinners due to our perceived righteousness forgetting where we have come from.

3. The Consequences of Forgetting- Pride leads to destruction

-Deuteronomy 8:19-20 19 Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. 20 As the nations which the LORD destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.
a. When you forget you loose your need for God. When you abandon God you are blind in a world of darkness.
b. If you don’t remember Him you will perish and be destroyed. It is only by the grace of God we are here.

How to Remember God-

Deuteronomy 11:18-19- “Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 20 And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

1. Remember His words by-

a. Lay them up in your heart and soul/ collect them- v18
b. Bind them to your hands. Whatever you find yourself doing. Hold onto them and don’t let go.- v-18
c. Teach Them- Best way to remember something. v-19
d. Speak About Them! Share them with others!v-19
e. Your house should stand for them. v-20
-Because we don’t see God we must remind ourselves of who He is, our testimonies, and his commandments

2. Remembering what God has done gives you confidence of the future.

Remember:

a. Who God says He is & what He has done.

- Duet 7:17-18 “If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I dispossess them?’ you shall not be afraid of them; you shall well remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:
- He has conquered the enemy, God of angel armies
-Know who God says he is. Here is just a few examples
He is the almighty, most high, master, Our Banner, Our Shepherd, Our Healer, His is There, Our Righteousness, Everlasting, Our Provider, Our Peace.

b. Your Past Testimonies

- Write down what God has done so you can remind yourself in the hard times
-God has never failed me yet, it is important to remind ourselves of this.

c. Testimonies of others.

-Knowing God was there for someone else give you confidence He will be there for you too!
Joshua 1:5 (LEB)
No one will stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will not fail you, and I will not forsake you.
Illustration- I knew God would provide for me before I ever had to experiencing Him come through in a personal time of need.
Why? It was more than just knowing he would provide for me from His word. I saw it lived out in the life of my Parents. (CFNI Story)
I know God heals I have seen my dad healed. Stroke at 30.
Closing-
Do what you do in remembrance of Him, his commands, word, sacrifice. Remember him by reading and knowing who he is, remembering your testimonies and those of others.
