Introduction

Scripture

Revelation 15:1–4 ESV
1 Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished. 2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. 3 And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! 4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

Purpose of Book

The purpose of Revelation is to challenge/encourage believers, who are expectantly awaiting the reign of Christ, to live faithfully for Him despite worldly circumstances, persecution, and the cosmic battle between God and Satan.

Main Point

The saints of God worship the one true God with joyous worship. Then the glory of God fills the heavenly sanctuary as the seven plagues are prepared.

God’s Presence in the Vision Cycles - Revelation 4-16

Seven Seals
Revelation 4:1 ESV
After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
Seven Trumpets
Re 8:1–5 ESV
When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
Seven Visions
Revelation 11:19 ESV
Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

Revelation 15:1-4 - The Song of Moses and the Song of the Lamb

1 Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished.

Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing
Notice again the switch of scenery - this time John looks to heaven
Seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished
Seven plagues
Recall Exodus 7-12 where God gave the Egyptians the 10 plagues
Also, God gave the Israelites plagues when wondering in the wilderness
Numbers 11:33 ESV
33 While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck down the people with a very great plague.
Numbers 25:8–9 ESV
8 and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. 9 Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
Which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished
Recapitulation, but these show the last judgment

2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands.

And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire
Revelation 4:6 ESV
6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind:
The sea mixed with fire represents the gulf between humanity and God, yet the redeemed are standing on it AND they are not consumed by the fire or by God Himself
And also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name
Those who have conquered the beast are those who have remained steadfast in their faith - they have not given up and persevered to the end
Revelation 12:11 ESV
11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands.
Revelation 14:1–3 ESV
1 Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder. The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, 3 and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.
Standing beside the sea of glass
Most likely “on” the sea of glass
Revelation 4:6 ESV
6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind:

3 And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty!

And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God,
The song of Moses is found in Exodus 15:1-18 and is given after Yahweh defeats the Egyptians liberating His people from their oppressors
And the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty!
Like the song of Moses the redeemed sing a song of worship to the Lamb who has defeated His enemies and has liberated His people from their enemies - the beast here
Psalm 98:1 ESV
1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
Great - why? Because the Lord has saved His people - He has delivered them!
Amazing
Exodus 15:11 ESV
11 “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?
O Lord God Almighty
He alone is able to save because of His power
He alone is able to conquer the beast

Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations!

He alone is the true King who rules over the nations/whole world

4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name?

All will/must fear Him
All will bring glory to His name because He has defeated the forces of evil!

For you alone are holy.

Why will people fear and glorify the Lord?
He alone is holy

All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

Second reason - All nations will come an worship Him
Third reason - His righteous acts have been made known - His
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Revelation 15:5-8 - The Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath

5 After this I looked, and the sanctuary of the tent of witness in heaven was opened, 6 and out of the sanctuary came the seven angels with the seven plagues, clothed in pure, bright linen, with golden sashes around their chests.

After this I looked, and the sanctuary of the tent of witness in heaven was opened,
The angel comes from the very presence of God
The opening of the sanctuary means that judgment is at hand
And out of the sanctuary came the seven angels with the seven plagues, clothed in pure, bright linen, with golden sashes around their chests.
The seven angels are commissioned for this divine task of judgment
The plagues refer both to the plagues of Egypt AND the plagues that Israel face - both for disobedience
Leviticus 26:21 ESV
21 “Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins.
Similar clothing to Christ
Revelation 1:13 ESV
13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.
The outfits represent priestly functions - they serve as priests to the most High God

7 And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever, 8 and the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.

And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God who lives forever and ever,
The seven bowls of the wrath of God are poured out on unbelievers
Revelation 8:3–5 ESV
3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, 4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. 5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
God is the eternal one
And the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power, and no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.
Smoke from the glory of God
Exodus 40:34–35 ESV
34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.
1 Kings 8:10–11 ESV
10 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.
Isaiah 6:3–4 ESV
3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
God is present!
The holiness of God is clearly evident
It is only after these seven bowls that people can enter His presence
Furthermore, the angels come from the presence of God - He alone is responsible for the 7 bowls of wrath and He will pour out His wrath

Main Point

The saints of God worship the one true God with joyous worship. Then the glory of God fills the heavenly sanctuary as the seven plagues are prepared.
