Mark 6:1–6 CSB
1 He left there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom that has been given to him, and how are these miracles performed by his hands? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” So they were offended by him. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.” 5 He was not able to do a miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he was amazed at their unbelief. He was going around the villages teaching.

Contrast In Belief

previous passages demonstrate what effectual belief looks like (Jarius and the women with the bleeding issue) Even belief that is sometimes lacking, but still is authentic (like like the disciples in the storm) this mornings passage contrasts belief with that with unbelief.
Mark 6:1–2 CSB
1 He left there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom that has been given to him, and how are these miracles performed by his hands?
His teaching and miraculous works were treated as suspect.
John 3:36 CSB
36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.
Acts 17:1–5 CSB
1 After they passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As usual, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and rise from the dead: “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.” 4 Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a large number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number of the leading women. 5 But the Jews became jealous, and they brought together some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. Attacking Jason’s house, they searched for them to bring them out to the public assembly.
Acts 17:10–12 CSB
10 As soon as it was night, the brothers and sisters sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. Upon arrival, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 The people here were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, since they received the word with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. 12 Consequently, many of them believed, including a number of the prominent Greek women as well as men.
Acts 17:5 (CSB)
5 But the Jews became jealous . . .
Jealousy is a feeling of resentment, bitterness, or hostility toward someone who has something that you don’t.
Notice the motivation for the Jews anger towards Paul in verse 5: Jealousy
Mark 6:3–4 CSB
3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” So they were offended by him. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.”
Mark records similar motivation with Nazaren’s anger towards Jesus.
Jesus quotes a well known saying (extra-biblical)
**Familiarity breeds contempt**
These people knew Jesus while he grew up, they knew his family.
Instead of being humbled by Jesus’ and his teaching they were instead envious and jealous of him… who does “this Jesus” think he is.
Proverbs 3:34 (CSB)
34 He [LORD] mocks those who mock but gives grace to the humble.
James reminds his readers of the warning of Proverbs 3:34
Mark 6:5–6 CSB
5 He was not able to do a miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he was amazed at their unbelief. He was going around the villages teaching.

Our Witness to those who know us well

Need to become familiar with the person and righteousness of Jesus; not our own.
Become familiar with the Gospel Message (Thy why, sin) (The who, Jesus)
Prayer Mark 9:29 “29 And he told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer.””
Consistent Walk (The message of Jesus living through over time will far out weigh one conversation or pithy statement about thier need to accept Jesus)
Trust int he power of the Gospel
Romans 1:16 CSB
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.
