Beatitudes Part 2

The Sermon on the Mount 3

We are in the middle of series on the Sermon on the Mount

We are in the book of Mathew chapter 5

This is a magnificent sermon,

The sermon Is about the kingdom of God.

This sermon was for the disciples.

Mat 5:1 Jesus saw the crowds.

So he went up on a mountainside and sat down.

His disciples came to him.

Mat 5:2 Then he began to teach them.

He said,

Last week we began with the Beatitudes

Mat 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

They recognize their need of God, their sins and their need of repentance.

We are nothing without God.

Mat 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

broken over our sins, they are mourning over their sin

Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Have a true evaluation of themselves, a revelation of who we are, without deception.

Mat 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Those who are famish and thirst for righteousness, they want more of God, they want to hear what is true

Let’s pray

The beatitudes are like steps of growth in our walk with the Lord

1 The merciful

Mat 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Compassionate, the word in Greek is eleemon (eleeymone)

Grace is getting what we don’t deserve, blessings, forgiveness

Mercy is not getting what we do deserve.

Commendation, Hell

Tit 3:5 He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we have done, but because of His own compassion and mercy, by the cleansing of the new birth (spiritual transformation, regeneration) and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

God gives us eternal life what we don’t deserve

God doesn’t give us what we do deserve, condemnation, hell.

All of us have obtain the mercy of God, now God wants for you to do the same, to whom?

To those who offended us who mistreated us show them the same kind of mercy I have shown you.

The teachings of the rabbi was, forgive up to 3 times, Peter being more than generous double it add 1 and asked shall I forgive them 7 times, Jesus surprises him answering not only 7 times but as many times as they asked you.

Mat 18:21 Then Peter came to Him and asked, "Lord, how many times will my brother sin against me and I forgive him and let it go?

Up to seven times?"

Mat 18:22 Jesus answered him, "I say to you, not up to seven times, but seventy times seven.

Mat 18:23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.

Mat 18:24 When he began the accounting, one who owed him 10,000 talents was brought to him.

Mat 18:25 "But because he could not repay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and his children and everything that he possessed, and payment to be made.

We sin against God and we have a debt that we cannot repay

Mat 18:26 So the slave fell on his knees and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.'

Mat 18:27 And his master's heart was moved with compassion and he released him and forgave him [canceling] the debt.

The master totally forgave him, God in Jesus has totally forgiven us

Mat 18:28 But that same slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began choking him, saying, 'Pay what you owe!'

Mat 18:29 So his fellow slave fell on his knees and begged him earnestly, 'Have patience with me and I will repay you.'

Mat 18:30 But he was unwilling and he went and had him thrown in prison until he paid back the debt.

Mat 18:31 When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and they went and reported to their master[with clarity and in detail] everything that had taken place.

Mat 18:32 Then his master called him and said to him, 'You wicked and contemptible slave, I forgave all that [great] debt of yours because you begged me.

Mat 18:33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave [who owed you little by comparison], as I had mercy on you?'

Mat 18:34 And in wrath his master turned him over to the torturers (jailers) until he paid all that he owed.

Mat 18:35 My heavenly Father will also do the same to [every one of] you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart."

There are consequences for the lack of forgiveness, or the lack of mercy, is spiritual suicide.

What God is asking of us is that we show mercy so we can be shown mercy.

Eph 4:32 Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you.

A good story about mercy is the last time King David saw King Saul, King Saul was persecuting David, he wanted to kill him, The Ziphites told king Saul where David was hiding, he and his 600 men, Saul being cautious came to look for David with his 300 thousand men army.

David after finding out that Saul was after him he decided to pay a visit to Saul, Saul was lain by his commander Abner inside the camp with his army encamped around him.

David asked for a volunteer to go with him, Abishai went with David, 2 men in the middle of this army of 300 thousand.

So they found Saul lain by Abner and just above Saul’s head was his spear and a jug of water.

Abishai, was thanking the lord for the great gifted.

He said God has deliver the enemy into your hands.

Now let me pin him down to the ground with one thrust of the spear, I won’t strike twice.

Gives you an idea of the size of Abishai Saul was a big man and he was telling David let me pin him down with one strike.

David said no, Saul deserved but David recognizes that Saul was God’s anointed, so he had mercy on him.

The lord had a deep sleep fall upon the army David went in and out and no one saw it.

So David went to the other side on a hill and told them that he had the spear and the jug and ask Saul why was he after him?

He had done nothing.

Saul repented and went back home, this was the last David spoke to Saul, Saul died in a battle after that.

2 The pure in heart

Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

A lot people hear this verse and tune out, we are assuming Jesus is talking about a sinless person.

Definitely this is not me, so we tune out.

Pure in heart, is the one who was made pure in Jesus, purified, we are not talking about perfection, or sinless.

Paul writing to the Romans clearly states that all of us have sin and fell short of the glory of God, there is no one who is pure besides Jesus.

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Jer 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things And it is extremely sick; Who can understand it fully and know its secret motives?

A pure heart is only possible with Jesus,

1Jn 3:3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

1Jn 3:4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

1Jn 3:5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins.

And in him is no sin.

1Jn 1:6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.

1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

This is for all of us who are purified by the blood of Jesus.

As we continue to walk in the light, acknowledging our sin repenting and asking Him to forgive us, we will see God, is about our purity of heart in relationship with God, and with one another.

3 The peacemakers

Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

We are not talking about people who are willing to have peace at any cost.

We have peace with God through Jesus

Rom 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

We are now to go and teach others how to make peace with God and each other.

We are not talking about arbitrators or people who have the gift to calm tension on a board meeting, is about peace with God.

God gave us the ministry of reconciliation

2Co 5:18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

2Co 5:19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them.

And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
