Introduction

The church is made of real people facing real life situation. These people have spiritual, emotional and physical needs. The office of an overseer and a deacon are there for such a cause. But what qualifies those to serve as an overseer and a deacon ?

Desire for a noble task

What saying is TRUSTWORTHY ?
1 Timothy 3:1 ESV
The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.
1 Timothy 1:15 ESV
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
Desire indicates those to serve in the church but this same word can describe;
a good desire
a physical need
a bad desire ( coveting and lusting)

Qualified church overseer

What is an OVERSEER?
The Greek term for overseer is episkops it used interchangeable with terms such as; elder, bishop, shepherd and pastor.
Acts 20:28–31 (ESV)
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears.

Those to serve as deacons

what is a DEACON ?
Acts 6:2 (ESV)
And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
The office of deacons is that of those appointed to serve tables
Mark 1:31 (ESV)
And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

Conclusion

Desire is the starting point, there is more to serving in the church
A leader does not just stays above the line between right and wrong, he stays well clear of the gray areas
