I. Introduction

Today we embark upon a little mini series about the identity of the believer.

We had a message from Ephesians 1:1-13 not long ago. You may want to listen to that message as a foundation for this one.

In this little series, we want to help prepare you for the work of the ministry as we carry out the great commission in our area.

This subject will also be the focus of our Bible study beginning on Wednesday 21, 2022.

I want us to look at where God has brought us from and a primary reason why He has brought us from where we used to be.

So let’s look at Ephesians 2:1-10.

II. Dead Man walking! (Eph. 2:1-3)

There is an idiom, according to the Free Dictionary (https://www.thefreedictionary.com/dead+man+walking), that says, “dead man walking.”

Sociologically in the US, this refers to “a condemned man walking from his prison cell to a place of execution.”

Spiritually speaking, according to Ephesians 2:1-3, that is exactly the state that everyone one of us were in.

Ephesians 2:1–2 ESV
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—

“being dead in trespasses and sins”

BDAG ‘Dead’ Definition: pert. to being so morally or spiritually deficient as to be in effect dead, dead, fig. ext. of 1
Louw/Nida ‘Dead’ Definition: pertaining to being unable to respond to any impulse or to perform some function—‘unable, ineffective, dead, powerless.’

• Trespasses are offenses again God!

• Sins are a departure from either human or divine standards of uprightness; to act contrary to the will and law of God

“in which you once walked”

Ephesians 2:2 ESV
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—

Following:

1. The Prince of the power of the air
2. The spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 2:3 ESV
3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

“among whom we all once lived”

1. In the passions of the flesh
2. Carrying out the desires of our flesh and mind
3. by nature children of wrath, like all the rest of mankind!

III. But God…(Eph. 2:4-7)

A. God is rich in mercy.

B. God loved us–even before we believed.
