Hunger and thirst....when have you been hungry?
Hunger and thirst - fasting
Hunger and thirst are for needs....how much do you need righteousness?
What is righteousness?
Pharisees
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Pharisees - keeping laws was righteousness....
Doing what God commands, but new kingdom it’s positional
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
We were positionally:
sinners - saints
broken - new creation
lost - found
far away - brought near
unrighteous - righteous
5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Garden - this morning - adoption....
Now we understand righteousness - do you hunger ant thirst for it?
Jesus - samaritan woman
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
Jesus = living water
Disciples return with food and urged him to eat
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
Jesus presents to us that righteousness is doing the will of the father
This is like food and water
Do you hunger and thirst for the righteousness of God?
So, we have been talking about on a personal level, but what about a societal level?
To be be positionally righteous before God, means to obey His commands...
To love Him with everything and to love one another
To be in community...
To serve the community....
8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Being in the position of righteousness, we seek and strive to see justice in the world...
God’s justice and righteousness go together....
You can’t have one without the other....
As believers, we should be striving for and seeking after justice and righteousness in out communities...
We should be standing up for what is right...
We should be looking after the least of these....
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Being in the position of righteousness, means seeking justice, loving mercy, doing unto the least of these and walking humbly with out God.
