Psalm 44:4-8 (KJV)
4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.
5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.
This Psalm was written no doubt from a series of battles fought by King David found in 2 Samuel 8:13-14
2 Samuel 8:13-14 (KJV)
13 And David gat him a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, beingeighteen thousand men.
14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David's servants. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.
It was written as a plea and prayer for divine intervention. It is amazing how often people who get into trouble immediately want help and God's help in the situation. David shows us another side. If you read the entire Psalm you find that by the end, David is putting God on the spot, we have lived faithfully, we haven't gone after false gods, we haven't sinned against you. We have done everything you have asked us to do and yet we are in trouble. That is a summary of course but what happens when we do all we are supposed to do and it seems that God still fails us? Well I think there are two reasons 1. God is never in debt to us - we are working by His plan, not ours 2. God's timing is not exactly the same as ours. What looks like defeat to us can ultimately be bringing about glorious victory.
First part of Bro. Sam Davis' story of his wife's shooting.
Driving his high powered truck through drug cartel territory they noticed a small little sports car tailing them, he was the scout, they were after their truck. Sam's son called them on their cell phone and told them to turn around. They pulled off to the side to pray and decide. They felt that God would have them go on. They made a pact with each other and with God, they were willing to die, but prayed that God would not allow them to be tortured.
they set up a road block and Bro. Davis drove right through them they opened fire he told how she kind of slumped over he floored the truck and made it to a hospital Sis. Nancy Davis was pronounced dead sometime later.
It was shortly after that that his son came by shoved his hands in his pockets and said, "dad he failed us didn't he? God failed us"
Brother Davis said it drove him to his knees. It looked like God had failed them that doesn't look like victory.
David gives us 5 Keys to Spiritual Victory even when it looks like we are losing.
God Must Be King v.4 All victory is Through His Power and by His Name v 5 Don't trust in anything else (He didn't throw away the bow or sword but his trust was in the Name of God) v 6. God is the one that saves v 7 All credit, glory and worship went back to God v 8.
Even when it seems that we are losing if we are doing our part and have put the battle in the Lord's hand we are assured of victory.
It was I think 3 years later Sam Davis gets a phone call from his son, who had some news to share about what would have happened if they had turned around.
What looked like a total loss was actually a victory. Keep trust in God, Keep holding on, Keep giving God the glory the New Testament puts it like this,
2 Timothy 2:12 (KJV)
12 If we suffer (endure), we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
We may have to wait for some things, but trust me God's victories are worth the wait.
