Lesson 1 We All Need A Place
Matthew 26:36–37 ESV
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
Mark 1:35 ESV
And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.
Luke 5:16 ESV
But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.
desolate place n. — an uninhabited and uncultivated region.
Solitude: the state or situation of being alone.
Luke 6:12 ESV
In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.

Learning from Jesus’ Prayer Habits

Here are a few general conclusions that we can draw from Jesus’ example of prayer and solitude.
His custom was to find a place where he could pray alone, whether it was on the mountain or in a desolate place.
He often prayed while it was dark, either at night, through the night, or early in the morning.
Prayer formed the foundation for his ministry.
He prayed before making major decisions.
His miraculous power and his glorious relationship with the Father are closely connected to times of prayer.
Where is your place?
Lesson 2 “It’s Ok To Express How You Feel
Matthew 26:38 ESV
Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”
Soul: My mind / Will / Emotions
Sorrowful: extremely sad adj. — crushed by grief; understood as if surrounded by sadness.
My Soul is crushed with grief!
Jesus was without sin but He was not without Feelings
Grief: Deep sorrow
Sorrow: a feeling of deep distress caused by loss, disappointment, or other misfortune suffered by oneself or others.
Sad: feeling or showing sorrow; unhappy.
It’s ok to be SAD!
But sadness doesn’t have to lead to an emotional unhealthy place!
This is a powerful expression of emotions that Jesus was feeling…
When we fail to express our emotions, our brain can often go into the fight-or-flight state. This is a physical reaction to stress that sets off a chain of events throughout our bodies. It increases our heart rate, slows digestive functions and makes us feel anxious or depressed.
The fight-or-flight response (also known as the acute stress response), refers to a physiological reaction that occurs when we are in the presence of something that is mentally or physically terrifying.
The fight-or-flight response is triggered by the release of hormones that prepare your body to either stay and deal with a threat or to run away to safety.

Matthew 26:39 ESV
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
Jesus fell on his face and prayed…
I’m sad yes but I’m not going to stay in this place of sadness!
Yes I have feelings but my feelings have to come under subjection!
Jesus had a Proverbs 3 moment…
“My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
possible adj. — capable of happening or existing.
Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
to acknowledge v. — to accept (someone) to be what is claimed.
Path: life circumstances ⇔ path n. — a person’s overall conditions or circumstances in life understood as a path.
We have to trust in the will of the Father
We have to acknowledge / accept God is who He Claims to be
God’s Path is the right path!
Nevertheless…
Not my path / Not my Will / Not my Desire / I have to overcome this sadness
I cannot let grief overtake me!
I’m talking to people stuck at the place of:
Sadness
Stress
Anxiousness
Worry
Depression
Grief
Sorrow
I will not fall into an emotionally unhealthy place!
My prayer:
God you are who you say you are…
I know what you are capable of....
But my will is not what is important
My will is not the best thing for my life
My desire is not your plan for my life…
Your will is the best thing for me!
Your plan is my desire....
