Ephesians 4:25–32 (KJV 1900)
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
We are actively working to understand the Holy Spirit’s work and how we are to respond to His leadership in our life.
89 verses refer to this person of the Godhead as the Holy Ghost
10 verses as the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit Quickened and resurrected our dead Spirit.
You and I were dead in our trespasses and sins
We were the walking dead with no spiritual power at all
Romans 8:11 (KJV 1900)
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Jesus resurrected by the quickening power of the Spirit
That’s how you were resurrected by the Same Holy Spirit
every facet of human nature has been polluted, defiled, and contaminated by sin.
Jesus came so our dead spirit could be resurrected to new life.
2. The Holy Spirit lives in believers and fills us with Himself
1 Corinthians 6:19 KJV 1900
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
The same Spirit that resurrected Jesus lives inside you
Ephesians 5:18–19 (KJV 1900)
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
You have God in you
God in your spirit
3. The Holy Spirit gives power to witness Christ’s saving power.
Acts 1:8 (KJV 1900)
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The power to witness is available when you witness
4. The Holy Spirit Guides believers into all truth.
John 16:13 (KJV 1900)
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
When you continue to ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you into truth as you study the Word of God and reveal truth to you.
5. The Holy Spirit Convicts of Sin, Righteousness, and Judgement.
John 16:8 (KJV 1900)
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
We need conviction of sin
We should never get mad at God for conviction
When God convicts of sin He is being merciful and proving His love to you
Thank God for his mercy in convitcion
The Holy Spirit is a person
He can be grieved
He has emotions
He is the person of God living inside you
We are the temple and that knowledge should change our conduct
Our thoughts
Ephesians 4:30 KJV 1900
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Ephesians 1:13–14 KJV 1900
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Heard the Word of God
The Gospel is accepted
The Holy Spirit is the earnest - A deposit of the inheritance that you have
Romans 7:22 KJV 1900
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
Inward man = spirit man
Before you were saved you didn’t delight in the law of God
If you don’t delight there is problem
2 Corinthians 4:16 KJV 1900
16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
Our inner man is supposed to being revived daily
Revive us again = Daily
Is Jesus your love
Our relationship with the Spirit
The HOLY Spirit
The HOLY Ghost
HOLY - That is Who He Is
This is His Name
Holiness is difficult for us to comprehend
How do you comprenend the Holiness of God
1 Corinthians 2:12 KJV 1900
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
“The spirit which is of God”
Worldliness kills our walk with the spirit
grieve = to make sad
Impurity
Acts that are not in congruence with Him makes Him sad
Praise the Lord for His Grace
We don’t use His grace as a license
Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness
What Is It That Makes The Holy Spirit Sad?
1. The Spirit of truth is saddened by hypocrisy
The Holy Spirit in you gives you the strength to be genuine
Genuinely Christ’s representative in this world
“ God’s child
“ Honest
“ loving
1 Peter 2:1 KJV 1900
1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
Faking the Christian life brings sadness
2. The Holy Spirit is Compassionate, Therefore heartlessness grieves The Spirit.
Jude 22 KJV 1900
22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:
Jude 23 KJV 1900
23 and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
Cold to the hurt and abuse of others
When we don’t care for the hurting
When we aren’t touched by the struggles others go through
How do we effectively intercede on the behalf of others who are grieving
Are you touched - have you entered into what they are in
3. The Holy Spirit Is Grieved by disunity.
Ephesians 4:2–3 KJV 1900
2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Allow the Lord to humble you
Take my yoke upon you - I’m lowly
Hasn’t God been longsuffering to you
Do you ever wonder why God would want to use you ?
This doesn’t mean we will agree on everything
petty differences
extrabiblical preferences
Isaiah 63:10 KJV 1900
10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: Therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
3. The Holy Spirit is happy to fill us with genuine worship, thankfulness, and humility
Ephesians 5:17–21 KJV 1900
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
The will of God is for you to be filled with the Spirit.
Worship = When it’s time to worship God in church and we are distracted by all that is going on in our life - That’s not God’s will
Gratitude = Giving thanks always
Humility = Submitting yourselves
Do you feel obligated or blessed
When we are not Worshipping, grateful, or submitting - we will be grieved
Joh 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Joh 15:27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
How much comfort do you think you will have if you are grieving the comforter?
How much harmony should there be at your home?
How much harmony should there be at church ?
Much of the problem Christians have at church is they don’t want to submit to someone else...
Submission is not who is your boss or your ruler
It’s supernatural
vexed = grieved
let Him tell you what to do
Let Him prompt you
Praise the Lord that He won’t quit on you
He’s committed to you !
Let’s be committed to Him
