One of the main attacks on Jesus today isn’t the fact He existed.
Of course he exist even atheist say he existed.
Isn’t that fact that he was a good man. and they he revolutionized philosophy as we know it.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
AMP
John 1:1 AMP In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.
John 1:2 AMP He was present originally with God
In the beginning reminds us of the opening verse in the OT Gen 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Its not saying God had a creation its saying that God is the source off all creation.
In this verse it doesn’t say in the beginning God created the Word.
In the beginning was the Word.
The word “beginning” often speaks about orgin or source.
That seems like thats the case because it’s shown that The Word is God’s agent of creation. This what we call the origin of all things.
John 1:3-4 “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
“Word” in the Greek is Logos.
The word Logos was widely used in Greek philosophical teaching. As well as Jewish wisdom literature and philosophy. So this was a very common word.
As well as Jewish
that does occur in the NT but only in the book of John is this word referring to Christ.
The Stoics understood logos to be the rational principle by which everything exists, and which is of the essence of the rational human soul. As far as they were concerned, there is no other god than logos, and all that exists has sprung from seminal logoi, seeds of this logos.
More generally, logos can refer to inner thought, hence ‘reason’, even ‘science’. That is one reason why some have advocated ‘Reason’ as a translation of logos (e.g. Clark). Alternatively, logos can refer to outward expression, hence ‘speech’ or ‘message’, which is why ‘Word’ is still thought by many to be the most appropriate term, provided it does not narrowly refer to a mere linguistic sign but is understood to mean something like ‘message’ (as in 1 Cor. 1:18).
Also I believe theres a deeper meaning beyond just the greeks mindset towards Logos. Thats the OT
1. The word used in creation.
Gen 1:3 “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.”
Psalm 33:6 “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”
2. The word used in revelation
Je. 1:4 “Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:”
Is 9:8 “The Lord sent a word against Jacob, And it has fallen on Israel.”
Ezk 33:7 ““So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me.”
Am 3:1,8 “A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken! Who can but prophesy?”
3. The Word for deliverance
Ps. 107:20 “He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.”
Is 55:11 “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
4.Gods word heals
Psalm 107:20 “He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.”
Proverbs 8:22f ““The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.”
Logos “ Word is the ultimate word to use for the embodiement of the person of Christ,
