Mark and Daniel Spitsburgen
We are in a new Series call The Church
We want to continue to peel back the veil of the history of the church.
What is it suppose to look like? What does the bible say? What is the role of pastors. What is your role?
This week we are going to talk about revivals. But first let’s start with the basics.

God’s desire for the church

Is to further the kingdom of God.
Matthew 6:33 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
We understand we should first seek the kingdom but with that comes HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS
Acts 8:12 ESV
12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Acts 19:8 ESV
8 And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.

Commonalities in Revival

From Geoff Waugh’s book Revival Fire we see 7 things that all revivals have in common.
They occurred in times of moral darkness and national depression.
Each began in the heart of a consecrated servant of God who became the energizing power behind it [only 1 spark].
Each revival rested on the Word of God, and most were the result of proclaiming God’s Word with power.
All resulted in a return to the worship of God.
Each witnessed the destruction of idols where they existed.
In each revival, there was a recorded separation from sin.
In every revival the people returned to obeying God’s laws.
There was a restoration of great joy and gladness.
Each revival was followed by a period of national prosperity.
There was a prophesy told in Joel that was later fulfilled in Joel of a great outpouring
Joel 2:28 ESV
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.
Now we see this scripture reference in Acts 2:17 but it says in the last days.
So many people wonder when the last days are but since Jesus left we are living in the last days.

Johnathan Edwards

Johnathan was from Northhampton Massachusetts. This was a time where were many people were moving to America but these were people with an adventurous spirit. There was no regard for morals. They were in search of a new life and found new freedom. With that came lots of sin. It was a free for all.
Northhampton had a population of about 1,100 people
Johnathan preached a message in 1974 and 6 people got saved. One of those 6 was a well know prostitute. All of a sudden word spread about what had happened.
In the next 6 months 300 people were saved.
In 1740 there was an english evangalist George Whitfield that came to Northhampton and met with Johnathan Edwards and a second wave of revival broke out.
Out of 300,000 people, about 10% were saved and 150 churches were started
People that were saved would just shake afterward. They were so aware of their sin that they would shake

David Morgan (1814-1883)

Welch Revivals which was in Whales
Morgan was a carpenter by trade but was a skeptic of what God was doing. Morgan heard a message from Humphrey Jones and was saved. They decided to work together.
Morgan would hold prayer meetings and preach to whoever would listen
In 1857 the Welch people heard of revivals that were happening over in the United States (1857 Hamilton, Ontario Revival; 1857 Fulton Street Prayer Revival) stirred the Welsh people’s hearts and drove them to their knees, pleading with God for a similar outpouring in their own land.
God began to move and On New Year’s Day, 1859, Morgan preached at Devil’s Bridge. An elderly minister having been present described the service: The evening service was terrible. So near was the revivalist to his God, that his face shone like that of an Angel, so that none could gaze steadfastly at him. Many of the hearers swooned. On the way home I dared not break the silence for miles. Towards midnight I ventured to say, ‘Didn’t we have blessed meetings, Mr. Morgan?’ ‘Yes.’ he replied; and after a pause, added, ‘The Lord would give us great things if He could only trust us.’ ‘What do you mean?’ I asked. ‘If he could only trust us not to steal the glory for ourselves.’ Then the midnight air rang with his cry, at the top of his voice, ‘Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory.’
Through this revival Wales saw over 110,000 come to Jesus

Azusa Street 1906-1909

Led by William J. Seymour
The reading of Acts 2 spurred people to run to the front of the house where they were having church and the spirit of God fell.
Thousands were saved.

Do we seek revival?

We don’t chase after signs and wonders but the one that gives them
God has not forgotten about America
Let’s get our focus off of what we see in the natural and focus on what is happening in the spiritual realm.
They say that Prayer is the engine room of heaven.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Let us not lose heart.
Matthew 7:7–12 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
